According to the results of an opinion poll conducted by ARD channel in Germany among 1,288 people, 61 per cent of citizens oppose the delivery of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, while only 29 per cent of respondents support this step.
Compared to August 2023, the share of supporters of the missile procurement decreased by 7 per cent. At the same time, the number of sceptical citizens increased by 9 per cent.
In addition, 62 per cent of respondents are concerned about a scenario in which Germany could be drawn into the conflict in Ukraine.
A further 70 per cent feared that Germany could be bugged by Russian intelligence services. 74 per cent support an increase in defence spending to 2 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected calls to supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles, saying it was not on the agenda because it would require German military intervention.
However, the main opposition Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) alliance will put a resolution on Taurus deliveries to Ukraine to a vote in the Bundestag next week.
