German arms exports reach new heights in early 2025
Germany’s arms exports are maintaining a record pace in 2025. According to SPIEGEL, which obtained a list prepared for Bundestag member Sevim Dagdelen of the BSW, the German government authorized arms exports worth approximately 1.3 billion euros in just the first month and a half of the new year.
One of the largest items is arms shipments to Ukraine, totaling around 238 million euros. In November, the failed coalition government had planned to reduce and reorganize arms exports.
The figures have reached record levels, particularly due to support for Ukraine, with exports totaling 13.33 billion euros approved in 2024.
Dagdelen, who criticizes the continued exports to Ukraine, stated, “Instead of continuing to spend taxpayers’ money on expensive arms gifts for Kyiva, the German government should support peace negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine.”
In contrast to the German government, which wants to position Ukraine for potential negotiations through further deliveries, Dagdelen speaks of an “unwinnable war.”
The German government authorizes arms exports in the Federal Security Council, which meets in secret and only informs the Bundestag of its decisions after a certain period.
