Germany proposes NATO mission for Greenland to counter US annexation pressure

Germany is preparing to propose the establishment of a joint NATO mission to protect security interests and conduct surveillance operations in the Arctic region.

According to a report by Bloomberg, citing two sources familiar with the matter, the administration in Berlin aims to use this initiative to de-escalate “Greenland tensions” currently straining relations with the US.

Modeled after the “Baltic Sentry”

Sources indicate that the proposed initiative could be named “Arctic Sentry” and would potentially encompass Greenland.

The mission is expected to be modeled after the “Baltic Guard,” an initiative launched by the alliance in the Baltic Sea a year ago specifically to protect critical infrastructure.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark that remains dependent on Copenhagen for foreign and security policy, continues to hold a prominent position on the agenda of the returning US President Donald Trump.

Trump has repeatedly voiced intentions to incorporate the island into US territory. In a statement made on January 10, he declared that Washington is prepared to “do something” regarding Greenland, even without the consent of the island’s inhabitants.

Accusing Denmark of failing to adequately protect the island or invest in its security, Trump emphasized that Washington would not permit a Russian or Chinese presence in Greenland.

The US President stated that his administration is prepared to use all necessary means to secure control over the island. The White House further clarified that the use of the American armed forces, acquisition, or other methods to establish control over Greenland remain “among the options.”

Concern in European capitals: “The alliance would cease to function”

According to a report by the Financial Times, the silence of NATO leadership regarding Trump’s declarations has sparked deep concern across European capitals.

European officials have begun to question the alliance’s capacity to protect Danish interests. Copenhagen, which had previously maintained a reserved stance on the Greenland issue and urged its EU and NATO allies to do the same, has since toughened its position.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that should the US attack another NATO member, “everything would stop,” effectively suggesting the collapse of the alliance.

London intervenes: Allegations of military preparations against a US invasion

The British newspaper The Telegraph has brought forward an even more striking claim. According to sources speaking to the paper, London is engaged in talks with European allies regarding the deployment of a NATO military contingent to Greenland to protect the Arctic region from a potential US invasion.

The report suggests that British officials recently met with their German and French counterparts to initiate the preparation process.

European nations hope that by significantly increasing their military presence in the Arctic, they can deter Trump from pursuing the idea of annexation.
