HTS and Druze reach integration agreement in Suwayda

The Syrian government, under the leadership of HTS, has secured an agreement with the Druze community for the full integration of Suwayda province into state institutions. This follows closely on the heels of a similar agreement with the SDG.

The agreement was finalized during a meeting yesterday between Syria’s new leader, Ahmed Shara, and prominent figures from Suwayda. As reported by the Qatar-based Al Jazeera Arabic, the HTS-led Syrian administration has formalized an agreement with both residents and officials of the predominantly Druze Suwayda province. This agreement ensures the region’s complete integration into state institutions.

A key provision of the agreement places the Suwayda security apparatus under the authority of the Syrian Ministry of Interior. It specifies that the local police force will be composed of residents from Suwayda province. Furthermore, the Syrian government will appoint a governor and a police chief to the province, though these officials are not required to be natives of Suwayda.

Commentators have noted that the agreement between the Damascus administration and the SDG, announced yesterday, closely resembles the practical aspects of the Druze agreement.

Nevzat Çiçek, Editor-in-Chief of Independent Turkish, shared his assessment of the agreement: “As far as I understand, the YPG might be assigned as a police force; there is no clause in the agreement stipulating that they will surrender their weapons. Border gates may be handed over to the US-backed Free Syrian Army.”
