Israel dismisses three generals over October 7 intelligence failures

The Israeli army has announced the dismissal of three generals for their failure to prevent the Al-Aqsa Flood operation by Palestinian groups in October 2023.

Army officials also announced that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against numerous senior officers.

Two weeks ago, Chief of the General Staff Eyal Zamir called for a “systemic investigation” into the vulnerabilities that led to the attack.

The government, however, is dragging its feet on establishing a state commission of inquiry despite public pressure.

Disciplinary penalties for senior commanders

According to AFP, the list of dismissed generals includes three division commanders, one of whom was serving as the head of military intelligence at the time.

An army statement released yesterday emphasized that the three individuals bear personal responsibility for the failure to prevent the attack launched by Hamas from the Gaza Strip.

The dismissal decision was formalized after all three had already resigned from their posts.

Disciplinary penalties were also announced for the commanders of the naval and air forces. Additionally, similar measures were taken against four other generals and numerous senior officers.

A report prepared by a committee of experts appointed by Eyal Zamir was published earlier this month. This document represents the findings of the army’s internal investigations into the October 7 attacks.

The report concluded that there was a “long-standing systemic and organizational vulnerability” within the military apparatus.

The investigation also highlighted the army’s “intelligence failure,” stating that despite possessing “extraordinary and high-quality information,” the military “failed to sound the alarm” regarding the attacks.

The document also criticized the “inadequate decision-making processes and force deployment on the night of October 7, 2023,” and pointed to failures in the army’s chain of command.
