The latest Ipsos poll shows a new balance of power among the right-wing parties in Italy’s coalition government, with Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right Forza Italia overtaking the League into third place.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) is still in first place with 27.5%, while Meloni’s approval rating remains high at 47%, but down from the 51% with which she won last year’s general election.
In second place is Elly Schlein’s Democratic Party (PD) on 20.5%, followed by former prime minister Giuseppe Conte’s 5-Star Movement on 16.1%.
On the right, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani’s Forza Italia consolidated its lead over Matteo Salvini’s League: Forza Italia got 8.7%, while the League remained at 8%.
According to the poll published in Corriere della Sella, Matteo Renzi’s Alleanza Verdi Sinistra and Italia Viva (Renewal) each have 3.3%, followed by Più Europa with 2.8% and Azione (Renewal) with 2.5%.
According to the poll, abstention is on the increase: 52.5% of Italians are either not voting or are undecided. If confirmed, this would be 4% higher than the abstention rate recorded in the last European elections in 2019.
The European elections will be held on 8 and 9 June and there is a 4% threshold for representation in the European Parliament (EP).
All three Italian government parties belong to different groups in the EP. The Brothers of Italy belong to the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), Forza Italia to the European People’s Party (EPP) and the Lega to Identity and Democracy (ID).
