Most Americans now oppose US military aid to Israel, Quinnipiac poll shows
A new poll released Wednesday shows that Americans’ approval of US support for Israel’s military campaign has fallen to its lowest point since the Gaza war began.
According to the Quinnipiac University survey, 60% of voters disapprove of the US sending military aid to Israel, while 32% support additional assistance. The nationwide poll, conducted from August 21–25, surveyed 1,220 registered voters.
This marks the highest opposition and lowest support for the US-Israel military partnership in Quinnipiac’s polls since Hamas launched the Al-Aqsa Flood operation.
Growing disapproval of Washington’s support comes as former President Donald Trump continues efforts to end the conflict, and Democrats struggle to manage internal divisions over backing Israel.
Democrats and independents are largely against Israel’s campaign in Gaza. The survey found that 75% of Democrats and 66% of independents oppose further military aid, while 56% of Republicans support it.
Half of respondents—including 77% of Democrats—said they believe Israel is committing genocide. In contrast, 64% of Republicans said they do not view Israel’s actions as genocide.
When asked about sympathy, voters were almost evenly split: 37% sympathized more with Palestinians, while 36% sympathized more with Israelis. These figures represent the highest sympathy for Palestinians and the lowest for Israelis in Quinnipiac polling since 2001.
Declining support for Israel adds urgency to White House efforts to end the war. President Biden and senior advisers held a strategy meeting Wednesday on post-war plans for Gaza, even as Israel continued its bombardment. Jared Kushner and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair also attended the talks.
The debate over support for Israel has become a central issue at the Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting in Minneapolis. Party leaders postponed resolutions on US-Israel relations in an effort to maintain “common dialogue.” One proposed resolution calls for a military arms embargo and suspension of US military aid agreements with Israel.
