UN investigation concludes Israel committed genocide in Gaza
An investigation conducted by the United Nations (UN) has concluded that Israel’s war on Gaza constitutes genocide.
The decision was noted as a historic development in the war, which has been ongoing for nearly two years.
Navi Pillay, chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, stated in an interview with Al Jazeera on Tuesday, “Based on the statements they made and the orders they gave, we have identified the President (Isaac Herzog), the Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu, and the former Minister of Defence (Yoav Gallant).”
Pillay added, “Since these three individuals are representatives of the state, the state is held responsible under the law. That is why we say it is the state of Israel that has committed genocide.”
Emphasis on genocidal intent in the report
According to the report, the Commission found that in addition to statements by Israeli officials, there was “indirect evidence” that led to findings of genocidal intent.
The report stated, “The Commission has concluded that Israeli authorities and Israeli security forces have carried genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.”
However, Israel’s ambassador in Geneva reacted strongly to the report’s findings, describing the report as “scandalous,” “false,” and a “slanderous delusion.”
