US to provide Ukraine with intelligence for targeting Russian energy infrastructure
US President Donald Trump has approved providing intelligence to Ukraine for conducting attacks targeting Russia’s energy facilities.
Sources familiar with the matter, speaking to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), reported that information regarding refineries, pipelines, power plants, and other infrastructure targets will be provided by US intelligence agencies and the Pentagon.
According to the sources, Trump gave this directive just before making a post on the social media platform Truth Social stating that “Ukraine can win the war and reclaim its territory.”
The report also noted that Washington has asked its NATO allies to provide similar support to Kyiv.
Long-range missiles on the agenda
Sources who spoke to the WSJ stated that the Trump administration is also considering the supply of “powerful weapons” that would allow Ukraine to strike more targets within Russian territory.
In this context, it was mentioned that long-range Tomahawk and Barracuda missiles are being evaluated.
Previously, US Vice President J. D. Vance had said that providing Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of 2,500 kilometers, was discussed at the White House. However, it is noted that Trump has not yet approved this step.
To date, the Trump administration had not given Kyiv permission to use long-range missiles, including ATACMS, against Russia.
Putin: ‘This means NATO entering the war’
Russian President Vladimir Putin had emphasized that the use of Western long-range weapons by Ukraine in attacks against Russia would mean that “NATO countries, the US, and European states are at war with Moscow.”
Putin stated that Ukraine does not have the capability to carry out such attacks on its own and that it would only be possible with Western assistance.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following his meeting with Trump last week, warned that they could strike Kremlin officials with long-range American weapons.
Zelenskyy said, “They need to know where the bunkers are. They need this. If they do not end the war, they will need those bunkers in any case.”
Ukraine had previously requested Tomahawk missiles from the US. Zelenskyy conveyed this request in a secret addendum to the “victory plan” he presented to then-President Joe Biden last year, but Kyiv did not receive the missiles.
According to a report by the Financial Times, Ukraine made a similar request to Washington in July, but this request also went unanswered.
