White House confirms European troop deployments will not deter Trump’s Greenland ambitions

The White House has clarified that the deployment of European troops to Greenland will not alter President Donald Trump’s strategic objective regarding the Arctic island.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Thursday that she believes the presence of European soldiers will have no impact on the president’s decision-making process or his goal of securing Greenland. Leavitt offered these remarks in response to inquiries regarding whether Europe’s decision to dispatch forces would shift Trump’s geopolitical calculations.

This week, several European nations—including France, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and the Netherlands—announced they would send troops to Greenland to participate in a Danish military exercise. Some of these countries already maintain a presence on the island. Estonia is also involved in the planning stages and has stated it will deploy its own forces “if requested.” While the maneuver is an intergovernmental military exercise, NATO is not officially participating in the mission.

The US president has repeatedly suggested the potential use of military force to secure the Arctic island, which he claims is at risk of falling under the influence of Russia and China. Following a meeting at the White House on Wednesday with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Danish Foreign Minister noted that Denmark and Greenland remain in a “fundamental disagreement” with Washington.

French President Emmanuel Macron, addressing the nation’s armed forces on Thursday, announced that France would deploy land, air, and sea assets to Greenland in the coming days. Macron stated that France and its European partners must maintain a presence wherever their interests are threatened, doing so without escalating tensions but remaining uncompromising regarding respect for territorial sovereignty.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and Norway have expressed explicit support for the establishment of a NATO mission dubbed Arctic Sentry. The initiative is intended to bolster the alliance’s influence in the region and demonstrate Europe’s commitment to regional security to the Trump administration.
