South Korean farmers in Cheongsong county, located in the country’s southeast, are concerned that their livelihoods could be jeopardized by a flood of cheap US imports following a potential trade agreement.<\/p>\n

Last week, South Korea’s Trade Minister stated that Seoul might offer concessions on some agricultural imports but emphasized that sensitive products must be protected. This concession would be part of any agreement aimed at removing or reducing US tariffs on automobiles, steel, and other key exports.<\/p>\n

According to Reuters<\/em><\/a><\/span>, farmers in Cheongsong are worried that these concessions could directly affect them.<\/p>\n

“US apples are very cheap. We can\u2019t compete with them,” said Shim Chun-taek, a third-generation farmer who has been growing apples for two decades.<\/p>\n

He now fears that South Korean farmers will be sacrificed to appease the US and support the nation’s manufacturing sector through a trade deal.<\/p>\n

The US is demanding better market access for its agricultural products, ranging from beef to apples and potatoes. In April, US President Donald Trump sharply criticized the high tariffs imposed by South Korea and Japan on rice imports.<\/p>\n

South Korea has taken steps to open its market and is currently the largest buyer of US beef and the sixth-largest market for US agricultural exports.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Washington continues to complain about ongoing non-tariff barriers.<\/p>\n

South Korea’s quarantine agency is still reviewing requests for apple market access made over 30 years ago, which has led to calls from Washington to expedite the approval process for a variety of fruits and potatoes.<\/p>\n

Increasing prices<\/strong><\/p>\n

Opening the sector would intensify the pressure on apple farmers, who are already grappling with a host of issues, including climate change, an aging population, and forest fires. These problems are leading to increased costs, reduced harvests, and higher prices.<\/p>\n

Bank of Korea Governor Rhee Chang-yong noted last year that the rising prices of apples and other agricultural products were contributing to inflation and suggested that more imports should be considered.<\/p>\n

The central bank indicated that South Korea’s food prices are higher than the OECD average, with apple prices being nearly three times the OECD average.<\/p>\n

“It is difficult to justify providing absolute protection to certain agricultural sectors just because they are highly sensitive,” said Choi Seok-young, a former chief negotiator for the Korea-US free trade agreement.<\/p>\n

After countries like Indonesia and the United Kingdom permitted more agricultural imports from the US in recent trade deals, agriculture has become one of the primary sticking points in trade negotiations between the US, South Korea, and Japan.<\/p>\n

For a long time, Seoul restricted imports of US beef from cattle older than 30 months. Following a 2008 agreement with the US to lift these restrictions, mass protests were organized by South Koreans who were concerned about the safety of the beef due to mad cow disease.<\/p>\n

The tariff negotiations have already ignited protests from farmer groups, and more could follow.<\/p>\n

“We will oppose apple imports no matter what,” Cheongsong county mayor Youn Kyung-hee told Reuters, adding that the public “will not stand idly by” if Seoul decides to open the market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
