Local Call<\/em> revealed that the agency was storing recordings of numerous Palestinian mobile phone calls on the platform.<\/p>\nSources from Unit 8200 stated that the agency used a customized, segregated section of Azure to store recordings of millions of phone calls made daily in Gaza and the West Bank.<\/p>\n
The intelligence derived from this data is reportedly used to identify bombing targets in Gaza.<\/p>\n
The investigation, published last Wednesday, has raised internal questions at Microsoft about whether some employees in Israel have been fully transparent about the work of Unit 8200.<\/p>\n
According to sources familiar with the matter, Microsoft is now reviewing the nature of the data stored in its data centers and investigating how this data might be used by the Israeli military in its ongoing war against Gaza.<\/p>\n
In May, Microsoft stated that a previous review had found “no evidence to date that Azure was being used to target or harm people” in Gaza, relying in part on assurances from its Israel-based staff. However, recent discussions at the company’s US headquarters indicate doubts about the accuracy of this information.<\/p>\n
Some executives have reportedly questioned whether employees managing military accounts have greater loyalty to the Israeli army than to the company.<\/p>\n
Leaked Microsoft documents show that several employees involved in Unit 8200 projects have publicly disclosed that they previously served or are on reserve duty in the signals intelligence unit, which is considered the equivalent of the US National Security Agency.<\/p>\n
Despite the latest concerns, Microsoft has not formally reopened its review of its relationship with the Israeli military, unlike a previous investigation launched after reports that Israel was dependent on Microsoft technology during its Gaza offensive.<\/p>\n
A Microsoft spokesperson said, “As demonstrated by our previous independent investigation, we take these allegations seriously. As we receive new information, we will be sure to seize the opportunity to verify the new data and take necessary measures.”<\/p>\n
Leaked files show that Microsoft’s senior management was aware as early as 2021 that Unit 8200 planned to transfer a large amount of sensitive intelligence data to Azure. This also included the implementation of advanced security measures for the military.<\/p>\n
However, Microsoft maintains that its executives were unaware that intercepted Palestinian phone calls were being stored on Azure, stating, “We have no information regarding the data stored in the customer’s cloud environment.”<\/p>\n
Following the publication of the investigation, an Israeli military spokesperson stated, “We appreciate Microsoft’s support in protecting our cybersecurity. We confirm that Microsoft does not and has not collaborated with the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] on data storage or processing.”<\/p>\n
After these statements, the worker-led group No Azure for Apartheid (Noaa) reiterated its demands for Microsoft to terminate all military contracts with Israel and publicly disclose the nature of its existing ties.<\/p>\n
Abdo Mohamed, a Noaa organizer who was laid off last year, accused Microsoft executives of ignoring the suffering of Palestinians, stating, “Satya Nadella and other executives claim they are unaware of how their company is collaborating with the Israeli regime to exploit the suffering of Palestinians, yet it was they themselves who committed Microsoft to this partnership in 2021.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
