Mexican authorities are accusing the Adidas company of “plagiarism” from artisans in southern Mexico, claiming a new sandal design bears a striking resemblance to the traditional indigenous footwear known as \u201chuaraches.\u201d<\/p>\n

The controversy has fueled accusations that the shoe brand is engaging in “cultural appropriation,” with officials stating<\/a><\/span> this is not the first time traditional Mexican crafts have been copied.<\/p>\n

Citing these concerns, local authorities have asked Adidas to withdraw the shoe model from the market.<\/p>\n

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Friday that Adidas is in talks with officials in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca to provide “compensation to the victims of plagiarism” and that her government is preparing legal reforms to prevent the copying of Mexican handicrafts.<\/p>\n

The design at the center of the dispute is the “Oaxaca Slip-On” sandal, created for Adidas Originals by US designer Willy Chavarr\u00eda.<\/p>\n

The sandals feature thin leather straps woven in a style very similar to traditional Mexican “huaraches.” Instead of a flat leather sole, the Adidas shoes have a thicker, sneaker-like sole.<\/p>\n

According to Mexican officials, the Adidas design incorporates elements that are part of the cultural heritage of the Zapotec indigenous communities in Oaxaca, particularly from the town of Villa Hidalgo de Yal\u00e1lag.<\/p>\n

Handicrafts are a significant source of income for Mexico, employing approximately half a million people. This sector constitutes about 10% of the gross domestic product in states like Oaxaca, Jalisco, Michoac\u00e1n, and Guerrero.<\/p>\n

For Viridiana Jarqu\u00edn Garc\u00eda, a huaraches designer and seller in the capital of Oaxaca, the Adidas shoes are a “cheap copy” of works that Mexican artists produce with time and care. “Art is disappearing. We are losing our tradition,” says Garc\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Oaxacan officials have demanded the withdrawal of the “Oaxaca Slip-On” from the market and a public apology from Adidas. Authorities described the design as “cultural appropriation” that could violate Mexican law.<\/p>\n

In an open letter to Adidas management, Oaxaca state governor Salom\u00f3n Jara Cruz criticized the company’s design, stating that “creative inspiration” is not a valid justification for using cultural expressions that “give identity to communities.” He added, “Culture is not for sale, it is to be respected.”<\/p>\n

In a letter released Friday afternoon, Adidas stated that the company “deeply values the cultural richness of Mexico’s indigenous peoples and recognizes the importance of the criticism.”<\/p>\n

The company expressed a desire to meet with local authorities to discuss how they can “compensate for the harm done” to the indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n

This dispute follows years of efforts by the Mexican government and artisans against major global apparel brands that they claim have copied traditional designs.<\/p>\n

In 2021, the federal government demanded that manufacturers such as Zara, Anthropologie, and Patowl publicly explain why they were copying the clothing designs of Oaxaca’s indigenous communities and selling them in their stores.<\/p>\n

Now, Mexican officials say they are working on stricter regulations to protect artists.<\/p>\n

However, Marina N\u00fa\u00f1ez, Mexico\u2019s Undersecretary for Cultural Development, also noted that they want to establish rules that do not deprive artists of the “opportunity to trade or collaborate with many of these companies that have a very broad commercial reach.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
