In the US-China trade war, Italian leader Giorgia Meloni is siding with Donald Trump and consequently wants to reduce Chinese investments in the country.<\/p>\n

The Italian government, led by Meloni, plans to reduce the stakes of Chinese investors in major companies to avoid potential tensions with the US.<\/p>\n

According to Bloomberg<\/em><\/a><\/span>, this policy affects both state-controlled and private companies considered strategic.<\/p>\n

A prominent example is the tire manufacturer Pirelli. The Chinese state-owned company Sinochem holds a 37% stake in the firm. The company, which supplies tires to Formula 1 racing teams, has faced criticism in the US due to its Chinese ownership, with discussions even arising about restricting its sales in the US. Now, the investor’s influence is set to be limited.<\/p>\n

Sinochem recently stated that its stake in the tire manufacturer is a long-term investment. However, the government in Rome wants to explore options that could compel the Asian investor to sell.<\/p>\n

Special rule introduced to protect critical infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Meloni government plans to utilize a legal instrument known as the “golden power rule.” This tool allows the state to provide special protection for critical infrastructure and companies.<\/p>\n

The government previously used this mechanism in 2023 to limit Sinochem’s influence over Pirelli. In April of this year, Pirelli’s board of directors downgraded Sinochem’s governance status following instructions from Italian regulatory authorities.<\/p>\n

Italy had welcomed Chinese investors after the 2008 financial crisis. Now, the country is attempting to minimize the risks posed by China.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Meloni is seen as US President Donald Trump’s “right-hand woman” in Europe and therefore wants to avoid any conflict with the US.<\/p>\n

Chinese investments are being excluded from critical infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Since Trump’s election and the increasing unpredictability of transatlantic relations, many EU capitals have begun to rethink China’s role as a trading partner,” said Beniamino Irdi, a former government official and head of the Italian political risk consultancy Highground, as reported by Handelsblatt<\/em>.<\/p>\n

According to Bloomberg<\/em>, Chinese investors are also withdrawing from the Italian energy grid operator CPT Reti. A unit of the State Grid Corporation of China owns 35% of the company and provides two of its board members.<\/p>\n

The Chinese are also divesting from Ansaldo Energia, one of the world’s largest power plant groups. Shanghai Electric has reduced its stake in the company from 40% to 0.5%. However, even this small share means the company cannot participate in certain tenders in the US.<\/p>\n

Chinese investors are currently active in approximately 700 Italian companies. The government’s attention, however, is primarily focused on large corporations in strategic sectors such as energy, transportation, technology, and finance.<\/p>\n

Warning from China for a ‘fair, equitable, and non-discriminatory business environment’<\/strong><\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that China-Italy investment cooperation is mutually beneficial and should not be influenced by third parties.<\/p>\n

“The Chinese government has always supported Chinese companies in international cooperation based on market economy principles and hopes that Italy will create a fair, equitable, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies and effectively protect their legitimate rights and interests,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

Tensions between Italy and China have increased in recent years. In 2023, under pressure from the US, Italy announced its withdrawal from China’s most significant transnational project, the Belt and Road Initiative. To ease tensions, Meloni had planned a visit to Beijing, though the government ultimately proceeded with the withdrawal.<\/p>\n

Europe is now ‘more selective’ in Chinese investments<\/strong><\/p>\n

Europe continues to focus on cooperation with China. However, EU countries are adopting a more selective approach, steering Chinese investments away from critical infrastructure like ports and power grids and toward projects such as battery factories for electric vehicles, which can create jobs and strengthen local economies.<\/p>\n

European capitals were once open to investments like those in Portuguese energy supplier EDP and Greece’s Piraeus port. Now, they fear that Chinese intervention could harm their national security and their relationship with Washington.<\/p>\n

New investments have decreased significantly since 2019. According to estimates from the consulting firm Highground, the EU’s trade deficit with China is projected to double, exceeding \u20ac400 billion ($466 billion) in the five years leading up to 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
