The US could deploy troops to Ukraine as part of security guarantees, a move that would aim to ensure the country’s safety following a potential peace agreement.<\/p>\n

According to White House officials, Russian President Vladimir Putin has, for the first time, not objected to the involvement of Western countries in this process.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump reportedly told his European allies after a meeting with Putin that he is prepared to contribute to Ukraine’s security, provided it is not linked to NATO.<\/p>\n

According to a\u00a0Bloomberg<\/em>\u00a0report<\/a><\/span> based on sources familiar with the meeting, Trump suggested that Putin would not oppose such an arrangement.<\/p>\n

Putin does not object for the first time<\/strong><\/p>\n

The task of publicly announcing this possibility fell to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s Special Representative, Steve Witkoff. Appearing on seven different television programs on Sunday, the pair argued that an immediate ceasefire was not possible but that significant progress had been made during the meeting in Anchorage.<\/p>\n

Rubio and Witkoff stated that Putin had accepted for the first time that the US and European nations could provide “security guarantees” to Ukraine. The Kyiv administration insists that such guarantees are necessary to prevent a potential new Russian attack.<\/p>\n

Deployment of US troops is on the agenda<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement to\u00a0Fox News<\/em>, Secretary of State Rubio said, “This would be a very big step if US security guarantees are offered by the President [Trump].” Witkoff added that this would “fundamentally change everything.”<\/p>\n

Speaking exclusively to\u00a0Axios<\/em><\/a><\/span>, one of Trump’s advisers answered “yes” when asked if such guarantees would include the deployment of American troops in Ukraine. Another adviser noted that there was no clarity on this issue yet, adding, “We will not negotiate through the press.”<\/p>\n

The situation remains uncertain. According to Witkoff, Putin agreed<\/a><\/span> in his meeting with Trump for the US and European countries to offer Ukraine security guarantees similar to NATO’s collective defense principle. However, Rubio later suggested that Moscow still needed to approve the plan.<\/p>\n

“Ukraine has the right to form alliances”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Secretary of State Rubio commented on the matter, stating:<\/p>\n

“Ukrainians do not want to go through what they have experienced before. They want to have the opportunity to continue rebuilding their country and live their lives. This is a very reasonable demand. We are working on this. And this is something the Russian side must understand. Like any sovereign country, Ukraine has the right to form alliances and agreements with other countries for security.”<\/p>\n

Several sources who spoke to\u00a0Reuters<\/em>, with information based on discussions among European, US, and Ukrainian officials, indicated that Ukraine would not be admitted to NATO. However, Putin did not seem to oppose the country receiving some form of security guarantee.<\/p>\n

According to the sources, Trump discussed security guarantees for Ukraine in a phone call with European leaders on Saturday. He proposed the idea of a guarantee similar to Article 5 of the NATO charter but outside the alliance’s framework. The sources said it was unclear what this would mean in practice.<\/p>\n

Signals of support for the plan from Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n

A German government spokesperson stated<\/a><\/span> on Monday that Berlin has seen “signals” that the US might be ready to commit to ensuring Ukraine’s security in the event of a peace agreement.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that London “welcomed” Trump’s comments on providing security guarantees to Ukraine and that the UK was ready to support this in any way possible, including by forming a “coalition of the willing.”<\/p>\n

However, on his way to Washington, Starmer added that it was important to end the war “the right way.” The Prime Minister said, “We must ensure there is a lasting, honest, and just peace.”<\/p>\n
