French Trade Minister Laurent Saint-Martin signaled openness to Chinese investment, aiming to ease tensions with Beijing.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a business forum in Paris, Saint-Martin endorsed the idea of closer economic ties with China but stressed that future investments should be sector-specific, linked to technology transfers, and include joint ventures.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a path ahead [\u2026] we are not there yet, but I believe it is entirely desirable for both sides,\u201d said Saint-Martin, calling for \u201copen markets and cross-investment.\u201d He warned that Europe \u201ccannot keep playing by old rules\u201d as trade increasingly becomes a \u201ctool of power.\u201d<\/p>\n

The minister argued that a new European strategy should be both \u201cdefensive\u201d \u2014 protecting key sectors and countering unfair practices such as subsidies \u2014 and \u201coffensive,\u201d by pursuing new markets and diversifying abroad.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s ambassador to France, Deng Li, echoed this message during the same panel, urging Beijing and Brussels to \u201cwork together to defend free trade and multilateralism.\u201d He stressed that both sides shared an interest in \u201cpromoting multilateralism and resisting inward-looking tendencies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, Paris strongly backed the EU\u2019s decision to impose steep tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. In response, Beijing introduced tariffs of up to 34.9% on EU brandy starting in July. Despite France\u2019s intensive diplomatic efforts to block the move, the measure hit French cognac and Armagnac producers, though major brands that agreed to price increases were exempted.<\/p>\n

At the same time, France\u2019s stance toward China contrasts with Brussels\u2019 discontent over its latest trade deal with Washington, which capped US tariffs on European goods at 15% in exchange for other concessions.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Fran\u00e7ois Bayrou denounced the deal as \u201csubmission,\u201d while EU Affairs Minister Benjamin Haddad urged the bloc to prepare its new Anti-Coercion Instrument \u2014 dubbed the \u201ctrade bazooka\u201d \u2014 which could restrict US service providers\u2019 access to the European market.<\/p>\n

Saint-Martin also noted that under the new US trade framework, Europe was \u201crelatively better off\u201d than some of its neighbors, but argued that \u201ca different negotiation strategy\u201d could have delivered \u201ca better outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview<\/a><\/span> with Euractiv<\/em>, he described today\u2019s world as being in \u201cpermanent negotiation mode,\u201d adding that even after a deal with the US, the EU must \u201ckeep up the pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
