The new imperialist threat against Venezuela, Latin America, and the Caribbean<\/em><\/p>\n

A shadow of war looms over the Caribbean. The recent unilateral threat by the United States government, under the Donald Trump administration, to deploy military ships and soldiers off the coast of Venezuela represents a dangerous and unacceptable escalation. This move, disguised as a supposed fight against drug trafficking, is nothing more than a new chapter of imperialist aggression against a sovereign country that has refused to submit to the dictates of the United States. The situation is worsening with the announcement, unprecedented in the history of international diplomacy, of a $50 million reward for the capture of the constitutional president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro Moros, and with the discovery by Venezuelan security forces of weapons and explosives in Venezuelan territory, demonstrating that Trump’s message to fortune-seeking adventurers has been heard and exploited by the Venezuelan extremist right.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The supposed fight against drug trafficking and the reward for Maduro<\/strong><\/p>\n

Washington’s justification for its military deployment is an “anti-drug operation.” However, this narrative collides with reality. The intensification of violence and drug trafficking in the region, especially in Colombia, a neighboring country and circumstantial ally of the United States, has been a persistent problem, without any measures of this magnitude having been taken. Furthermore, there are many other examples of the history of interventions by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, and other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. In this new attempt, the true objective of the US government, as evidenced by the facts, is the destabilization\u2014from within\u2014and the overthrow of the Venezuelan government led by Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.<\/p>\n

Venezuelan Executive Vice President and Minister of Petroleum, Delcy Rodr\u00edguez, stated: \u201cDEA Director Terry Cole is deeply aware that the DEA is the largest drug cartel in the world. Countless documents and evidence support this. The agency’s own reports, called the ‘National Drug Threat Assessment’ for 2024 and 2025, nowhere mention Venezuela as a significant factor in drug trafficking to the United States. This crude ruse seeks to support the aggression against Venezuela to seize its immense energy resources and undermine Bolivarian internationalism. The entire planet knows that the real cartel is in the North. Venezuela will firmly defend the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and historical dignity of its people,\u201d said the Venezuelan Vice President.<\/p>\n

The announcement of an increase in the reward to $50 million for the capture (and indirect assassination) of President Maduro represents an affront to international law and the sovereignty of peoples. It is an act of modern piracy that seeks to legitimize foreign intervention.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in Bolivarian Venezuela, security and defense forces have dismantled terrorist plots, finding high-caliber weapons and explosives that, according to investigations and statements by the Minister of the Interior, Justice, and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, are linked to far-right sectors. These findings demonstrate that the reward message is directed at hitmen and seeks the collaboration or betrayal of internal elements intent on sowing chaos and violence in the country.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

People’s solidarity and international support<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the face of this real threat, international solidarity has been immediate and overwhelming. The response of the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – People’s Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP) was swift. At an Extraordinary Summit, the member countries unanimously rejected threats to regional peace. Likewise, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) has expressed its concern and advocated for respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty.<\/p>\n

Brazil, the South American giant, has stated that it is paying close attention to signs of pressure from the United States, as it mobilizes military forces toward Venezuela. Caracas-Brasilias relations have not been the best during Lula da Silva’s third term; however, presidential advisor for international affairs, Celso Amorim, stated in a public hearing in the Brazilian Congress: “We view with concern the mobilization of American warships toward Venezuela.”<\/p>\n

Amorim also stated: “When the (presidential) elections took place, we had doubts and avoided recognition (of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro’s government); however, we maintained the bilateral relationship, which is between state and state. Having good relations (with Venezuela) is not an option, but rather an imposition of geography.” It’s worth remembering that Brazil and Venezuela share a long border of more than 2,000 kilometers, and that Lula and Trump are currently facing escalating bilateral tensions over the imposition of 50% tariffs on Brazilian exports to the US and over Bolsonaro, a former Trump ally, who is under house arrest for the case investigating his involvement in the coup d’\u00e9tat in Brazil on January 8, 2022.<\/p>\n

For their part, world powers such as China and Russia have expressed strong support for Venezuela, defending peace and multilateralism in the face of the United States’ military escalation. These gestures demonstrate that the world is not unipolar and that most nations defend the right of people to decide their own destiny without interference.<\/p>\n

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Beijing rejects “the use of force or the threat thereof in international relations and opposes interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs from outside, whatever the pretext.”<\/p>\n

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov expressed “solidarity with the Venezuelan government,” while the parties confirmed their willingness to “continue strengthening bilateral strategic partnerships” at a time when the White House is posing significant danger to a region that, true to the Declaration of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, adopted in 2014 in Havana, has prioritized dialogue over force to resolve differences.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

What’s next? National and popular mobilization<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Maduro’s response to this new imperialist threat has been to call on the entire Venezuelan people to defend national sovereignty and independence. Faced with this situation, all Venezuelans, not just the security and defense forces, or the police and military, have been called upon to join the bolivarian militias, forces composed of civilians who will receive military training to prepare for and respond to the looming threat. The Venezuelan president proclaimed:<\/p>\n

“People of Venezuela! As Commander-in-Chief of the Bolivarian Armed Forces (FANB), I call for a Great Enlistment Day in Bol\u00edvar Square and military units near your community, Saturday, August 23rd and Sunday, August 24th. Let’s get ready to be on the front lines in the defense of national sovereignty and peace.”<\/p>\n

The response to the Bolivarian government’s call has been clear and overwhelming. Social organizations, political parties, officials from the various branches of government\u2014which in Venezuela are five: Legislative, Executive, Judicial, Citizen, and Electoral\u2014and the Bolivarian Militia, with more than 4.5 million active members, have taken to the streets to reject the imperialist threat and support the government of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.<\/p>\n

This popular mobilization, which has reaffirmed the defense of sovereignty, peace, and support for the Bolivarian Revolution, is the most genuine expression of the Venezuelan people’s commitment to the defense of their homeland. The activated Bolivarian Militia constitutes a popular force that reaffirms the civic-military-police character of the Bolivarian Revolution.<\/p>\n

There’s no room for confusion or misunderstanding. There’s no doubt that this US military maneuver represents a new imperialist threat against Venezuela, Latin America, and the Caribbean. And it has nothing to do with combating the scourge of drugs.<\/p>\n

Therefore, as a Venezuelan woman, I appreciate the gestures of brotherhood and solidarity from the peoples of the world and from the ALBA-TCP countries, CELAC, as well as the governments of China and Russia, who, in advocating for peace, defend a multipolar world, respect for international law, non-intervention, and the sovereignty of the Venezuelan State and people. Nothing in the world can justify the threat of foreign military aggression against Venezuela or any other sovereign country. Latin America and the Caribbean is a zone of peace, and despite all threats, Venezuela is and will remain sovereign, free, independent, Chavista, and Bolivarian. That is why Venezuela will be defended by its people as a truly Bolivarian and Chavista nation.<\/p>\n
