{"id":11264,"date":"2025-09-04T15:22:58","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T12:22:58","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2025-09-04T15:22:58","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T12:22:58","slug":"germany-cuts-social-welfare-as-defense-spending-triples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harici.com.tr\/en\/germany-cuts-social-welfare-as-defense-spending-triples\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany cuts social welfare as defense spending triples"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-spacing=\"double\">Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the CDU-SPD government are launching a comprehensive attack on Germany\u2019s social welfare system.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">As a first step, they are demanding a 10% cut\u2014about \u20ac5 billion\u2014in spending on the so-called \u201ccitizens\u2019 income\u201d (B\u00fcrgergeld).<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">On Tuesday, Merz said this was only the \u201cminimum amount.\u201d He had earlier claimed that Germany could \u201cno longer afford\u201d its welfare system and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" spellcheck=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.german-foreign-policy.com\/news\/detail\/10101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">declared<\/a><\/span>, \u201cThe Bonn Republic has ended forever,\u201d calling it a \u201cbreak with the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The \u201cturning point\u201d announced by Merz and his predecessor Olaf Scholz has already led to a dramatic increase in military spending, and now to cuts in social spending. The tripling of the defense budget is being financed at the expense of the poorest.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\"><strong>Germany\u2019s 20th century comes to an end<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Over the weekend, Chancellor Friedrich Merz launched a broad assault on the German social system under the slogan \u201cAutumn of Reforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">In 2024, roughly \u20ac58.2 billion was spent on citizens\u2019 income, which Merz has now singled out.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">\u201cEspecially with the so-called citizens\u2019 income, things cannot remain as they are, and they will not. This is not just a turning point, but a break with the past,\u201d Merz said.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Referring to West Germany and the welfare state during the Cold War, he stated that \u201cthe Bonn Republic has ended forever.\u201d He insisted that 10% of B\u00fcrgergeld could \u201cdefinitely be saved,\u201d rounding this to \u20ac5 billion, and stressed this was the \u201cminimum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The statement came shortly after the Federal Employment Agency reported in August that unemployment had reached its highest level in 15 years, about 3.025 million people.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Merz admitted the situation \u201ccould get worse,\u201d blaming US tariff policy, which he said would \u201csignificantly affect many German companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\"><strong>No budget for welfare, but money for arms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">German media appear to have joined the chorus. For example, n-tv warned that measures such as higher transport subsidies or tax breaks for agricultural diesel risked creating \u201cextra holes in the budget that we really cannot afford.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">At the same time, no one mentions the \u201choles\u201d caused by arms spending. Germany\u2019s military budget, about \u20ac52 billion last year, will rise to \u20ac152.8 billion by 2029. Military infrastructure spending is expected to add about \u20ac70 billion by then.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Altogether, additional military and infrastructure spending amounts to an increase of \u20ac170 billion. Despite higher net borrowing (an increase of around \u20ac40 billion is planned), the federal government expects a financing gap of \u20ac74 billion in 2029.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\"><strong>Growing poverty in Germany<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The unprecedented rise in military spending comes at a time when poverty is growing, the number of super-rich is increasing, and social divisions are deepening.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">In April, a Deutsche Bundesbank study found that the richest 10% of German households now own 54% of the country\u2019s total wealth, while the poorer half owns just 3%.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Meanwhile, the number of billionaires is rising rapidly. In 2023 alone, the number grew by 23, nearly 10%, bringing the total to 249.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">According to the German Equality and Welfare Association (DPWV), 15.5% of the population will be affected by poverty in 2024, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous year.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">About 5.2 million people suffer from such severe deprivation that they cannot heat their homes or buy new clothes. The average income of people affected by poverty was \u20ac921 per month, below the \u20ac981 recorded in 2020.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\"><strong>Protests against militarism met with state violence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Militarization, social cuts, and rising poverty are accompanied by growing repression against those opposing war and rearmament.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Last weekend in Cologne, police blocked a demonstration of about 3,000 people protesting the Federal Republic\u2019s militarization. Police used violence, kettled over a thousand protesters until the early morning hours\u2014sometimes without water\u2014and detained them.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">147 protesters required medical treatment due to injuries inflicted by police, and 18 were hospitalized.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">One organizer said, \u201cPolice prevented people from receiving urgent medical aid.\u201d Officers also \u201cphysically attacked the organizers\u2019 lawyer and detained journalists present at the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\"><strong>Rheinmetall protests face crackdowns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The demonstration was part of the \u201cDisarm Rheinmetall\u201d alliance\u2019s week of action against militarization and arms exports. Similar rallies had been held earlier in Cologne.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">At a September 4 press conference, organizers and supporters said there had been massive interventions against freedom of assembly.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\"><a spellcheck=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.t-online.de\/region\/koeln\/id_100899602\/polizeikessel-bei-koelner-anti-rheinmetall-demo-sorgt-fuer-heftige-kritik.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">According to <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">t-online<\/span><\/em><\/a>, the march was repeatedly halted for trivial reasons (such as people covering their faces or the shape of banners) and was finally dispersed without proper consultation.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Speakers at the press conference reported that protesters were denied access to water and toilets, and medical aid was delayed.
