More than 140 world leaders gathered to discuss significant geopolitical issues. However, the summit was dominated by Israel&#8217;s attacks on Gaza.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">France and Saudi Arabia organized a conference on Monday to discuss how best to implement a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Riyad Mansour, Palestine&#8217;s ambassador to the United Nations, stated, &#8220;Palestine will be a major issue at this session of the General Assembly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">In July, Paris and Riyadh proposed the <a spellcheck=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/09\/1165835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">New York Declaration<\/span><\/a>, which called for &#8220;a just, peaceful, and lasting resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the effective implementation of the two-state solution.&#8221; The UN General Assembly adopted the New York Declaration by a large majority on September 12.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">To support this declaration, many countries used this year&#8217;s UN General Assembly to announce their formal recognition of an independent Palestinian state. Before this week&#8217;s high-level summit, more than 145 countries had recognized Palestine. On Sunday, Australia, Canada, Portugal, and the United Kingdom joined this list, and on Monday, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and Malta followed suit.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Following a series of recognitions on Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said it was &#8220;an important and necessary step toward achieving a just and lasting peace.&#8221; The Trump administration refused to grant Abbas a US visa to attend the UN General Assembly, but last Friday, the General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution allowing Abbas to present a pre-recorded video address to be played on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">While the recognition of a Palestinian state is expected to boost the morale of those living in the occupied territories, the move is largely seen as a symbolic gesture. It is unlikely to contribute much to bringing about change in the region, which faces a catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza, a sharp increase in attacks by Jewish settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, and intensified Israeli military raids, among other challenges.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that he would never recognize a Palestinian state. Both Israel and the US boycotted Monday&#8217;s meeting on the two-state solution. Israel&#8217;s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, described the event as a &#8220;circus.&#8221; Israeli officials have warned that recognizing Palestine could lead to retaliatory measures, such as the annexation of new areas of the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The UN Security Council is expected to hold a meeting on Tuesday regarding the situation in Gaza and the wider Middle East.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) began its high-level week in New York on Monday.
