Politico<\/em>\u00a0said that Trump is determined on this issue and that the president promised that the West Bank, which is under the control of the Palestinian Authority and not Hamas, would not be allowed to be annexed by Israel.<\/p>\nAnother person familiar with the talks stated that despite Trump’s assurance, a ceasefire to end Israel’s nearly two-year war against Hamas is still far off.<\/p>\n
Other sources said that Trump and his team presented a “white paper” outlining the administration’s plan to end the war, which includes a pledge regarding annexation and other details such as governance and post-war security.<\/p>\n
Special envoy for peace missions Steve Witkoff gave some details about the proposal on Wednesday. “We presented Trump’s 21-point plan for Middle East peace in Gaza,” he said, speaking at the Concordia summit in New York. “I think this plan addresses Israel’s concerns and also the concerns of all the neighbors in the region.”<\/p>\n
Witkoff did not make any comments regarding the West Bank.<\/p>\n
Before his meeting with eight Arab and Muslim countries at the United Nations headquarters, Trump told reporters that this was the “most important” event of the day, but journalists were not allowed into the meeting, and participants have not yet made an official statement about its content.<\/p>\n
In an interview with\u00a0Fox News<\/em>\u00a0on Tuesday evening, President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan described the meeting as “productive” but did not go into detail.<\/p>\nErdo\u011fan and Trump plan to meet again at the White House on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Arab leaders have been disappointed by Trump’s opposition to the recognition of a Palestinian state and his support for Netanyahu’s attacks on Hamas.<\/p>\n
These attacks spread beyond Gaza earlier this month when Israel attempted to eliminate Hamas officials while they were in Qatar for peace talks.<\/p>\n
According to sources, as leaders entered Tuesday’s meeting, they intended to emphasize to the US president that any Israeli move on the West Bank could lead to the collapse of the Abraham Accords.<\/p>\n
The decision by some key US allies to recognize a Palestinian state has led to calls in Israel for Netanyahu to annex all or part of the West Bank.<\/p>\n
Some far-right members of his government see the current situation as an opportunity to achieve the Israeli right’s long-sought goal of annexing these lands. With elections scheduled in Israel next year, Netanyahu may see an opportunity to appeal to his hardline supporters by taking a step in this direction.<\/p>\n
Under Netanyahu’s leadership, Israel has done much to expand and consolidate its de facto control over the West Bank, including expanding Jewish settlements and tightening security measures in the occupied territories.<\/p>\n
Arab and European officials have warned that the official annexation of the West Bank would destroy the last hopes for a two-state solution.<\/p>\n
Arab states have said this is a red line that would end all hopes for Israel’s further integration into the Middle East.<\/p>\n
Netanyahu is set to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday. Arab officials and others are wondering whether Trump will decide to put more pressure on the Israeli leader to end the war, in which more than 64,000 Palestinians have been killed.<\/p>\n
