Financial Times<\/em>\u00a0that during a meeting in the fall, Trump administration officials asked World Economic Forum (WEF) officials to remove or reduce undesirable agenda items as a condition of the US president’s attendance.<\/p>\nWashington announced last week that Trump would attend the event in Switzerland in person for the first time in six years. Trump’s last appearance was a virtual speech just days after his inauguration in January, where he called on the assembled business elites to manufacture their products in the US or face tariffs.<\/p>\n
Two sources said that senior US officials asked the Davos leadership to tone down or avoid discussions on topics such as women’s empowerment and diversity, the green transition, climate change, and international development finance as a condition for Trump’s participation.<\/p>\n
“The US side wanted to ensure that Trump’s participation in the elite and progressive event would still be well-received by his MAGA base,” said one of these sources.<\/p>\n
Another source stated that the WEF, which had already become more pragmatic regarding the global geopolitical background, was able to give such “assurances” to Trump administration officials.<\/p>\n
A third source said the pressure exerted by the Trump administration on the WEF regarding these issues echoed demands made in other multilateral forums for continued US participation.<\/p>\n
Under the Trump administration, the US withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement and suspended a large portion of American foreign aid, including programs related to mitigating climate change, the health and rights of women and girls, and global development. It also ordered an end to the federal government’s diversity efforts.<\/p>\n
In response to questions about the negotiations with the WEF, a White House spokesperson said, “As President Trump stated at the UN, the world would benefit from adopting America’s approach, which focuses on economic security, secure borders, and peace through strength, instead of woke ideology.”<\/p>\n
The WEF maintained that “no government influences its editorial independence or the agenda of its meetings,” adding, “We select meeting themes and topics based on their global importance.”<\/p>\n
Another person familiar with the discussions described these talks as “routine” for officials representing heads of state attending the invitation-only event. “The WEF never accepts requests to shape or change the agenda, but it is normal for topics and discussions to be raised for stakeholders attending such a summit,” they said.<\/p>\n
The theme for the 2026 Davos meeting has been set as “The Spirit of Dialogue.” Discussions will focus on five global challenges: cooperation in a contested world, unlocking new sources of growth, investing in people, responsibly harnessing innovation, and building prosperity “within planetary boundaries.”<\/p>\n
In recent years, the forum had placed greater emphasis on climate and social agenda themes. In 2019, climate activist Greta Thunberg delivered a speech warning that “our house is on fire” and urged leaders to take action on the climate crisis.<\/p>\n
In 2020, the forum launched the “Great Reset” of capitalism, a post-pandemic initiative promoting sustainability, inclusivity, and systemic change.<\/p>\n
The WEF reported revenues of 469 million Swiss francs ($585 million) for the year ending June 2025. It has diversified its global sponsorships, which include some major US corporations.<\/p>\n
The WEF has been in turmoil for about 18 months, triggered by whistleblower allegations that led to two official investigations into the organization’s management and the conduct of its founder, Klaus Schwab. Schwab stepped down earlier this year after more than 50 years in his role. The investigations, which found no significant misconduct but identified minor irregularities, have continued to cast a shadow over the institution.<\/p>\n
The WEF is now trying to stabilize itself with new interim leadership. In August, it appointed BlackRock chief Larry Fink and Roche vice-chairman Andr\u00e9 Hoffmann as its new co-chairs, promising stricter oversight.<\/p>\n
The forum announced in October that registrations for the event had already reached record levels. It expects more than 60 heads of state and government, along with 300 government leaders and 1,600 representatives from business and NGOs, to attend in January.<\/p>\n
