Two US soldiers and one US interpreter were killed in an attack on a meeting between forces linked to the new administration and American forces in the Palmyra region of Syria.<\/p>\n

In a statement following the attack, which occurred Saturday in the desert near the historic Syrian city of Palmyra, HTS Interior Ministry spokesman Nureddin al-Baba said that three members of the Syrian security forces who engaged the attacker were also wounded.<\/p>\n

According to a Syrian official who spoke<\/a><\/span> to the\u00a0Associated Press<\/em>, the individual who carried out the attack that resulted in the deaths of three US citizens in Syria had joined the new Syrian administration’s internal security forces as a base security guard two months ago and had recently been reassigned to another post due to suspicions of potential ISIS links.<\/p>\n

According to an\u00a0Enab Baladi<\/em>\u00a0correspondent<\/a><\/span>, US forces openly entered deep into the Badiya region in a convoy of about 15 military vehicles. The convoy was escorted by HTS forces from the al-Tanf base on the border strip.<\/p>\n

The correspondent stated that US forces conducted a joint patrol accompanied by the new Syrian army stationed in Palmyra.<\/p>\n

Al-Baba said that Syria’s new authorities faced shortages in security personnel and were therefore forced to recruit staff quickly following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad.<\/p>\n

“We were shocked to have taken over all of Syria within 11 days, which placed a great responsibility on us in terms of security and administration,” al-Baba said.<\/p>\n

The attacker was among 5,000 members who had recently joined a new unit of the internal security forces established in the desert region known as Badiya, one of the areas where ISIS remnants are still active.<\/p>\n

Al-Baba said the leadership of the internal security forces had recently begun to suspect there was an informant leaking information to ISIS and had started evaluating all members in the Badiya region.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in a statement<\/a><\/span> to the state’s official news channel\u00a0al-Ikhbariya<\/em>, al-Baba said the Internal Security Command had previously warned allied forces in the Syrian desert region about the possibility of security breaches or ISIS attacks, but he noted that coalition forces did not heed these warnings.<\/p>\n

Al-Baba said the competent authorities are working to confirm the attacker’s organizational affiliations, and the assessment will focus on whether the attacker had a direct connection to ISIS or had merely adopted its ideology.<\/p>\n

Al-Baba asserted that the attacker held no leadership role within internal security and was not a guard for any leaders.<\/p>\n

The investigation raised suspicions about the individual who carried out the attack, but authorities decided to continue monitoring him for a few more days to determine if he was an active member of ISIS and, if so, to identify the network with which he was communicating.<\/p>\n

At the same time, “as a precaution,” the man was reassigned to guard the base’s equipment, a position further away from the leadership and the patrols of the US-led coalition forces, he said.<\/p>\n

Al-Baba said that on Saturday, the man stormed a meeting between US and Syrian security officials who were having lunch together and opened fire after clashing with Syrian guards. The attacker was shot and killed at the scene.<\/p>\n

Following the attack, HTS forces “launched large-scale operations in the Badiya region” and dismantled a number of ISIS cells, he said. The Interior Ministry later announced in a statement that five suspects had been arrested in the city of Palmyra.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump stated that the attack was “carried out by ISIS in an extremely dangerous area against the US and Syria,” adding that the response would be very harsh.<\/p>\n

In a post on\u00a0Truth Social, Trump added that Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara (Abu Mohammad al-Jolani) was “outraged and extremely saddened” by the attack.<\/p>\n

The US Embassy in Syria condemned the “terrorist” ambush that targeted the joint patrol between the US and the Syrian government in central Syria. The embassy expressed its sorrow over the killing of three US soldiers and an accompanying civilian and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded Syrian soldiers.<\/p>\n

It also emphasized Washington’s determination to “defeat terrorism” in cooperation with its Syrian partners.<\/p>\n

The Turkish Foreign Ministry reiterated its support for the Syrian government’s efforts to “increase stability and security in the country and combat terrorism.” In a statement, the ministry said, “We offer our most sincere condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the attack, as well as to our partners in the International Coalition established to fight the Islamic State organization, the governments of Syria and the US.”<\/p>\n

The Qatari Foreign Ministry reaffirmed the state’s firm position of rejecting violence, terrorism, and criminal acts, regardless of their motives or justifications. It extended its condolences to the families of the victims, the governments and peoples of the US and Syria, and wished the injured a swift recovery.<\/p>\n
