The eastern regions of Ukraine and the capital, Kyiv, are facing the risk of a complete blackout due to intensified Russian attacks targeting energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Officials state that the Russian army aims to sever the energy connection between the east and west and leave Kyiv powerless by deliberately destroying the country’s power generation and transmission systems.<\/p>\n

In Ukraine, where each wartime winter is more difficult than the last, even the capital is experiencing regular 16-hour power outages due to the scale and intensity of the attacks.<\/p>\n

Kyiv is one step away from a complete blackout<\/strong><\/p>\n

An energy expert speaking to\u00a0The Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0said<\/a><\/span>, “We are one step away from a complete blackout in Kyiv.”<\/p>\n

A senior European diplomat also confirmed the situation, stating, “Even if we are not on the brink of a complete blackout in the east of the country, we are very close.”<\/p>\n

Russia’s attacks peaked last month<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ukrainian Deputy Energy Minister Mykola Kolesnyk announced that Russia launched approximately 5,000 drones and missiles in November, compared to around 2,000 per month at the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n

Kolesnyk noted that the majority of the attacks targeted power plants, transmission lines, and natural gas infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Sources providing information to\u00a0The Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0stated that these attacks threaten to effectively split the country in two by disabling the transmission systems that run from the west, where most of the electricity is generated, to the east.<\/p>\n

Valeriy Osadchuk, public relations director for the grid operator Ukrenergo, also confirmed that one of the targets of the regular attacks is the transmission and distribution infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Moscow’s goal is to create energy islands<\/strong><\/p>\n

The European diplomat stated that in addition to dividing Ukraine’s power grid, Moscow is pursuing a “strategy of creating energy islands.”<\/p>\n

The diplomat said the goal is “to deprive specific regions of all production capacity and electricity supply.”<\/p>\n

Kolesnyk added that the most affected areas are the border regions, stating, “The Russians are trying to attack all energy facilities, from small to large, throughout the day.”<\/p>\n

Repair efforts in the capital are falling short<\/strong><\/p>\n

Attempts to disconnect eastern Ukraine from the western grid began in October. Since then, Kyiv, as well as the Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv oblasts, have been subjected to intense bombardment.<\/p>\n

A Ukrainian government source speaking to\u00a0The Economist<\/em>\u00a0said, “They primarily want to leave the eastern wing without electricity, not the entire country.”<\/p>\n

According to the report, attacks have become more frequent since then, leaving less time for repair crews to work.<\/p>\n

Although outages in Kyiv were reduced to 2.5 hours a day at the beginning of December, an intense bombardment on the night of December 5 caused significant damage to the grid again, and Kyiv’s electricity supply dropped considerably.<\/p>\n

The corporate sector in the capital is reportedly already operating largely on generators.<\/p>\n

Maksym Tymchenko, CEO of DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, described their difficult situation:<\/p>\n

“We are responding as quickly as we can, but it is becoming increasingly difficult. We have lost a significant portion of our capacity. Our current priority is to find spare parts in various European countries that can be delivered quickly to Ukraine. Transformers and gas compressors are the most critical.”<\/p>\n
