The Iranian government is expanding its nuclear cooperation with Russia as part of a long-term program aimed at increasing electricity generation capacity and achieving full energy independence.<\/p>\n

Tehran has announced<\/a><\/span> that joint efforts are underway with Moscow for the construction of new nuclear power plants in addition to existing projects.<\/p>\n

Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, provided information on the processes conducted with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).<\/p>\n

Kamalvandi stated that all inspections in recent months were carried out with the approval of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.<\/p>\n

Regarding the scope of the inspections, spokesperson Kamalvandi said, “Our technical cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency continues. All inspections in recent months were conducted with the approval of the Supreme National Security Council, covering activities in sectors of our nuclear industry that have not been targeted by any attacks.”<\/p>\n

New contracts signed with Moscow<\/strong><\/p>\n

Emphasizing the ongoing active nuclear cooperation with Russia, Kamalvandi noted that one nuclear power plant is currently operational, while two others are under construction.<\/p>\n

During the recent visit of the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran to Moscow, additional contracts were signed between the two parties.<\/p>\n

Four plants to be built in the Sirik region<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are plans to build four nuclear power plants, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, in the Sirik region of southern Iran.<\/p>\n

These projects are part of Tehran’s long-term cooperation strategy with Russia, which aims to generate a total of approximately 20,000 megawatts of nuclear electricity.<\/p>\n

Kamalvandi stressed that Iran’s ultimate national strategy is to achieve the capacity to design and build nuclear power plants with domestic resources, without depending on foreign partners.<\/p>\n

Additionally, it was reported that a Russian delegation recently visited Tehran, and the two sides are working on a cooperation protocol for small modular nuclear reactors.<\/p>\n

Kamalvandi underlined that these reactors, which he described as a rapidly growing global trend, will play a critical role in supporting energy security and grid stability.<\/p>\n

Energy alliance against Western sanctions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Iran’s expanding nuclear partnership with Russia is based on a deepening strategic energy alliance, driven by the desire to strengthen cooperation outside of Western-dominated systems at a time when both countries face Western sanctions.<\/p>\n

For decades, Russia has played a central role in Iran’s civil nuclear program. Iran’s only operational commercial reactor, the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, began supplying electricity to the national grid in 2011.<\/p>\n

Under existing agreements, Russia supplies nuclear fuel for the facility and takes back the spent fuel under IAEA supervision.<\/p>\n

Moscow is also financing and constructing the second and third units at Bushehr, with hundreds of Russian experts working on the project.<\/p>\n

Beyond Bushehr, Iran and Russia have signed comprehensive agreements this year that include cooperation frameworks for four large reactors in the Sirik region and small modular reactors to increase nuclear capacity.<\/p>\n

Fossil fuels to be allocated for export<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Tehran government plans to generate approximately 20 gigawatts of nuclear electricity as a long-term goal.<\/p>\n

Officials state that this goal is vital for addressing chronic energy shortages, reducing dependence on fossil fuels for domestic consumption, and directing oil and natural gas resources toward exports.<\/p>\n

Lavrov emphasizes priority partnership<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Monday that relations with Iran continue to be a priority in Moscow’s foreign policy.<\/p>\n

Reiterating Russia’s commitment to supporting Iran and its legitimate rights, Lavrov drew attention to the importance of dialogue in resolving regional and international crises.<\/p>\n
