Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces, was killed in a car explosion in southern Moscow.<\/p>\n

According to two law enforcement sources who spoke<\/a><\/span> to the\u00a0RBC<\/em>, the person in the vehicle at the time of the explosion was General Sarvarov.<\/p>\n

Although it was initially reported that the driver survived with injuries, sources confirmed the general’s death.<\/p>\n

Murder investigation launched<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Investigative Committee of Russia has opened a case regarding the incident on charges of “murder committed in a generally dangerous manner” (Article 105 of the Criminal Code) and “illegal trafficking of explosive devices” (Article 222.1).<\/p>\n

Under the Russian Criminal Code, the first charge carries a sentence of life imprisonment, while the second carries a sentence of up to 20 years. The investigation is being directly overseen by the central apparatus of the agency.<\/p>\n

Suspicion of Ukrainian intelligence being investigated<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Investigative Committee is considering the possibility that the crime was organized by Ukrainian intelligence agencies.<\/p>\n

The explosion occurred in the early morning of December 22 on Yasenevaya Street in Moscow. The general, trapped in the vehicle, sustained severe injuries at the scene.<\/p>\n

According to the initial findings of the investigative authorities, the explosive device was placed under the vehicle and detonated by remote control. A source informed<\/a><\/span> the TASS<\/em> agency that the vehicle that exploded was a Kia Sorento.<\/p>\n

Remote-controlled device identified<\/strong><\/p>\n

Law enforcement sources stated that the explosive used had a power equivalent to approximately 300 grams of TNT.<\/p>\n

The Telegram channel SHOT claimed<\/a><\/span> that the 56-year-old general was found to have multiple shrapnel wounds, leg injuries, and a fractured facial bone.<\/p>\n

The general’s military history and medals<\/strong><\/p>\n

As of May 2024, Fanil Sarvarov was serving as the head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian army. During the same period, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general by a presidential decree.<\/p>\n

Born on March 11, 1969, in the city of Gremyachinsk in the Perm region, Sarvarov graduated in 1990 from the Kazan Higher Tank Command School, named after the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. He later continued his education at the Military Academy of the Armored Forces named after Marshal of the Soviet Union R.Y. Malinovsky and the Military Academy of the General Staff.<\/p>\n

Serving in fundamental roles throughout his military career, Sarvarov participated in the Ossetian-Ingush conflict and counter-terrorism operations in Chechnya between 1992 and 2003.<\/p>\n

He later served in the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff and the Operational Training Directorate of the Armed Forces. The general also played an active role in organizing and conducting military operations in Syria from 2015 to 2016.<\/p>\n

Sarvarov was appointed head of the Operational Training Directorate in 2016.<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Sarvarov was awarded numerous state decorations, including the Order of Courage (1995), the Medal of Suvorov (2000), the Medal of the Order ‘For Merit to the Fatherland’ II Degree (2003), the Order of Military Merit (2014), and the Medal of the Order ‘For Merit to the Fatherland’ I Degree (2014). In 2016, Sarvarov also received the honorary title of “Honored Military Specialist of the Russian Federation.”<\/p>\n
