{"id":12755,"date":"2025-12-25T11:32:45","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T08:32:45","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2025-12-25T11:32:45","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T08:32:45","slug":"us-issues-friendly-warning-to-turkiye-amid-rising-eastern-mediterranean-tensions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harici.com.tr\/en\/us-issues-friendly-warning-to-turkiye-amid-rising-eastern-mediterranean-tensions\/","title":{"rendered":"US issues &#8216;friendly warning&#8217; to T\u00fcrkiye amid rising Eastern Mediterranean tensions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-spacing=\"double\">According to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" spellcheck=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ekathimerini.com\/politics\/foreign-policy\/1290492\/us-to-turkey-dont-escalate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">claims<\/a><\/span> by the Greek newspaper <em>Kathimerini<\/em>, the US administration has recently begun warning T\u00fcrkiye to avoid experiencing tensions with its neighbors in a \u201cfriendly manner and without wagging a finger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Basing its claim on diplomatic sources, the newspaper continued:<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">\u201cIn light of this development, Greek diplomats are wondering whether the dogfight between Greek and Turkish F-16 fighter jets on Friday\u2014the first since February 2, 2023\u2014was a one-off incident or a sign that T\u00fcrkiye is ignoring the message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\"><em>Kathimerini<\/em> argued that T\u00fcrkiye wants to purchase F-35s from the US and, therefore, \u201ccannot ignore\u201d American warnings.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The report states, \u201cIt is even ready to dispose of the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missiles it purchased, which it previously considered humiliating and practically impossible, by returning them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">On the other hand, the hoisting of the Greek flag on Greece\u2019s first Belharra frigate, Kimon, is described in the Greek media as an \u201cunquestionably very important event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The <em>Kathimerini<\/em> report notes, \u201cAfter nearly thirty years, the country is acquiring a significant, state-of-the-art surface combatant at a particularly critical time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Representing a qualitative upgrade for the Greek Navy, the Belharra frigates are seen as strategically vital for Greece. These classes of ships are designed for multi-mission roles and feature low observability. Although they have not yet been tested in actual combat conditions, it is believed that the four frigates Greece plans to purchase will radically change the operational landscape in the region.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Thanks to the advanced anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the frigates, the Greek Navy will be able to operate more comfortably beyond Greece\u2019s territorial waters and maintain a permanent presence between Crete and Cyprus.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The report points out that \u201ccontrol of the waterways\u201d is critical due to factors such as Greece\u2019s recent emergence as a transit hub for US natural gas, international interest in its ports, and its potential participation in the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC):<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">\u201cSince 1830, the most consistent element of Greek foreign policy has been its alignment with Western maritime powers. This is a strategic choice adopted by generations of Greeks and is unlikely to change.
