In an interview<\/a><\/span> with journalist Ignacio Ramonet, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced his country’s desire to cooperate with the US.<\/p>\n

Stating that his country’s slogan is “peace, not war,” Maduro expressed that they view the American people as “brothers.”<\/p>\n

Despite the tense atmosphere between the two nations, Maduro presented concrete proposals for cooperation in economic and security sectors:<\/p>\n

“If the US wants to make an agreement to fight drug trafficking, we are ready. If they want oil, we are ready for investments like those offered by Chevron; whenever, wherever, and however they want.”<\/p>\n

“Hostage diplomacy” concerns in Washington<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite Maduro’s moderate messages, developments on the ground indicate that tensions between the two countries remain high.<\/p>\n

A source speaking<\/a><\/span> to CNN<\/em> reported that Venezuelan authorities have detained at least five US citizens in recent months as relations between Washington and Caracas have strained.<\/p>\n

While noting that some of these individuals might be linked to drug trafficking, the source conveyed that the Donald Trump administration interprets the situation differently.<\/p>\n

According to the report, the Trump administration believes Maduro is using these detentions as leverage to pressure the US.<\/p>\n

A complex picture prevails in the energy sector. The US-based oil company Chevron continues its operations in Venezuelan oil fields thanks to licenses provided by both the Joe Biden and Donald Trump administrations. Ships loaded with crude oil are able to sail smoothly from Venezuelan shores to the US.<\/p>\n

Conversely, ships belonging to the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) are closely monitoring other tankers in the Caribbean Sea that are on the US sanctions list for allegedly carrying Venezuelan oil.<\/p>\n

Full blockade decision from Trump<\/strong><\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump announced in mid-December that a full blockade would be applied to all sanctioned oil tankers going to or coming from Venezuela.<\/p>\n

Accusing Maduro of “stealing American assets, oil, and lands,” Trump stated that the oil on seized ships would be retained by the US.<\/p>\n

Tensions between the two countries are also escalating through military moves. Since September, the Washington administration has been targeting Venezuelan boats it claims are carrying drugs.<\/p>\n

In a statement made at the end of December, Trump announced that the US had carried out an attack on Venezuelan territory for the first time.<\/p>\n

According to a report by CNN<\/em>, the CIA struck a remote pier on the Venezuelan coast, allegedly used by the criminal organization “Tren de Aragua,” with an unmanned aerial vehicle.<\/p>\n

Nicolas Maduro refrained from commenting on the alleged attack.<\/p>\n

The Venezuelan leader argues that the US is using the fight against drug trafficking as a pretext to overthrow him. The Caracas administration states that Washington’s true goal is to control the country’s natural resources.<\/p>\n
