The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has announced<\/a><\/span> that the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), Aidarus al-Zoubaidi, has fled to an unknown location. A delegation led by Zoubaidi was expected to travel to the Saudi capital, Riyadh, for comprehensive dialogue talks.<\/p>\n

The coalition reported<\/a><\/span> that Zoubaidi was scheduled to fly from Aden to Riyadh but failed to board the aircraft and went missing. According to the statement, the entire STC delegation, excluding Zoubaidi, departed Yemen for Riyadh in the early hours of the morning.<\/p>\n

Zoubaidi accused of high treason<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following these developments, the Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, announced that Zoubaidi had been removed from the council on grounds of “high treason.” Al-Alimi announced that he requested the Attorney General to immediately launch an investigation into Zoubaidi and take the necessary legal actions.<\/p>\n

Preventive strike from coalition forces<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Saudi-led coalition reported that the legitimate government and coalition forces received intelligence regarding Zoubaidi\u2019s movements. Intelligence reports revealed that Zoubaidi mobilized a large force comprising armored and combat vehicles, heavy and light weapons, and ammunition.<\/p>\n

It was stated that the military force in question left Aden at midnight and was later detected in the Dhale province. Coalition forces neutralized these forces with “preventive strikes” carried out during the night. Coalition officials emphasized that this operation prevented Zoubaidi\u2019s “attempt to ignite conflict.”<\/p>\n

From alliance to conflict: Balances shift in the south<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two forces that had acted together until recently against the Ansarullah (Houthi) movement, which controls northern Yemen, have now clashed on the ground. The UAE-backed STC launched an offensive against Saudi-backed government forces in December and reiterated its demand for an independent state in the south.<\/p>\n

Despite warnings from the Riyadh administration, the STC seized control of vast areas in southern Yemen, including Hadramawt and al-Mahrah. These two provinces constitute approximately half of Yemen’s territory.<\/p>\n

Tension on the Riyadh and Abu Dhabi line<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Riyadh administration conducted airstrikes on Yemen\u2019s Mukalla port on December 30, targeting what it claimed was a weapons shipment linked to the UAE. Saudi Arabia supported the Presidential Leadership Council\u2019s call for the withdrawal of Emirati forces from the country.<\/p>\n

The Abu Dhabi administration argued that the shipment did not contain weapons and emphasized its commitment to Riyadh\u2019s security. Immediately following this statement, the UAE announced it had ended its “counter-terrorism mission” in Yemen.<\/p>\n

With the support of Saudi airstrikes, forces loyal to the Presidential Leadership Council regained control in Hadramawt and al-Mahrah. The STC had announced on Saturday that it would participate in the peace talks to be hosted by Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
