US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said<\/a><\/span> that Elon Musk\u2019s AI chatbot, Grok, will join Google’s generative artificial intelligence engine on the Pentagon network.<\/p>\n

“Very soon, we will have the world’s leading artificial intelligence models on all of our department’s classified and unclassified networks,” Hegseth said in a speech at Musk’s space company, SpaceX, in South Texas.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes just days after Grok, which is integrated into the Musk-owned social media network X, faced global backlash and scrutiny for generating highly sexualized deepfake images of people without their consent.<\/p>\n

Malaysia and Indonesia have blocked Grok, while the United Kingdom’s independent online safety regulator announced on Monday that it had launched an investigation. Grok has since restricted image generation and editing to its paid users.<\/p>\n

Hegseth stated that Grok would be available for use within the Department of Defense later this month, and announced that the military would make “all appropriate data” from its IT systems available for “artificial intelligence use.” He also said that data from intelligence databases would be transferred to AI systems.<\/p>\n

Hegseth’s aggressive push to embrace the still-developing technology contrasts with the Biden administration, which has been pressing federal agencies to develop policies and use cases for AI while also remaining wary of its misuse.<\/p>\n

Officials have said that rules are needed to ensure the responsible use of this technology, which could be used for mass surveillance, cyberattacks, and even lethal autonomous devices.<\/p>\n

In late 2024, the Biden administration implemented a framework directing national security agencies to expand their use of the most advanced AI systems, while prohibiting certain uses, such as applications that would violate constitutionally protected civil rights or any system that would automate the deployment of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Hegseth spoke of the need to streamline and accelerate technological innovation in the military, stating, “We need innovation coming from everywhere, developing rapidly and purposefully.”<\/p>\n

Hegseth noted that the Pentagon possesses “battle-proven operational data from two decades of military and intelligence operations,” adding, “AI is only as good as the data it receives, and we will ensure that data is available.”<\/p>\n

The defense secretary said he wants the artificial intelligence systems within the Pentagon to be responsible, but added that he rejects AI models that “don’t let you fight.”<\/p>\n

Hegseth said his vision for military AI systems means they will operate “without ideological constraints that limit lawful military applications,” and stated that the Pentagon’s artificial intelligence “will not be ‘woke’.”<\/p>\n
