Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has stated<\/a><\/span> that preparations for a potential military occupation must begin, citing Donald Trump\u2019s persistent threats to seize the territory.<\/p>\n

“A military conflict is unlikely, but the possibility cannot be entirely ruled out,” Nielsen said during a press conference held Tuesday in the capital, Nuuk.<\/p>\n

Nielsen announced that the government of Greenland will establish a task force comprising representatives from all relevant local authorities to help citizens prepare for potential disruptions to daily life.<\/p>\n

The government is working to distribute new guidelines to the public, including a recommendation to stockpile a five-day supply of food at home.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the same press conference, Mute B. Egede, the island\u2019s finance minister and former leader, stated that Greenland is under “immense pressure” and that it is “necessary to be prepared for all scenarios.”<\/p>\n

Trump has declared that he must seize Greenland on “security” grounds and, early Tuesday, shared an AI-generated image depicting himself planting a US flag on the island.<\/p>\n

With a population of 57,000, Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark but operates under its own government, which oversees most domestic affairs with the exception of defense and foreign policy. In recent days, Denmark has deployed additional troops to Greenland to bolster its Arctic defenses.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a report in\u00a0The Globe and Mail<\/em>\u00a0reveals<\/a><\/span> that the Canadian military has modeled its response to a potential US invasion after Trump referred to the country as a potential 51st state. The report noted that unnamed officials emphasized the likelihood of a US invasion remains extremely low.<\/p>\n

In an effort to strengthen regional security, Denmark and seven other NATO nations deployed a group of officers to the island last week as part of Operation Arctic Endurance. Denmark\u2019s Joint Arctic Command plans to expand military exercises to ensure a year-round presence.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the US president escalated tensions between Washington and Europe by threatening to impose new tariffs on the eight NATO allies deploying military personnel, effective February 1.<\/p>\n

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned on Tuesday that if the tariffs are implemented, Europe will be forced to respond, potentially leading to “significant consequences” on both sides of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n

During a parliamentary question-and-answer session, Frederiksen stated, “If a trade war is launched against us\u2014which I would not advise\u2014we must, of course, respond. We would be compelled to do so. I hope we do not reach that point. I hope we succeed in convincing the Americans that this is not the path to follow.”<\/p>\n
