The Cuban government announced<\/a><\/span> on Wednesday that its border guard units killed four people aboard a Florida-registered vessel after the occupants allegedly entered Cuban territorial waters and opened fire on authorities.<\/p>\n

According to a statement from the Cuban Ministry of the Interior, the incident occurred on the morning of Feb. 25, 2026. A speedboat, bearing the Florida registration number FL7726SH, was detected approximately one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel in Cayo Falcones, located within the Corralillo municipality of Villa Clara province.<\/p>\n

The ministry stated that as a surface unit carrying five Cuban border guards approached the vessel for identification, the speedboat\u2019s crew initiated gunfire, wounding the commander of the Cuban patrol boat. In the ensuing exchange of fire, four individuals aboard the foreign vessel were killed and six others were wounded. The survivors were evacuated for medical treatment.<\/p>\n

“In the face of current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its determination to protect its territorial waters, based on the principle that national defense is a fundamental pillar for safeguarding the sovereignty of the Cuban State and ensuring stability in the region,” the Ministry of the Interior stated. “Investigations by competent authorities are ongoing to fully clarify the events.”<\/p>\n

The Cuban government alleged that most of the 10 individuals on the boat possessed “known criminal and violent backgrounds,” according to a report<\/a><\/span> by US broadcaster NPR. Havana identified two of the passengers as Amijail S\u00e1nchez Gonz\u00e1lez and Leordan Enrique Cruz G\u00f3mez.<\/p>\n

The authorities claimed these individuals were wanted for their roles in “the promotion, planning, organization, financing, support, or execution of acts linked to terrorist activities carried out on national territory or in other countries.”<\/p>\n

“Assault rifles, pistols, improvised explosive devices (Molotov cocktails), bulletproof vests, telescopic sights, and camouflage uniforms were seized,” the government statement<\/a><\/span> read.<\/p>\n

Havana also confirmed the arrest of Duniel Hern\u00e1ndez Santos, describing him as a collaborator sent from the US “to guarantee the acceptance of the armed infiltration.” Officials stated that Santos has since confessed to his involvement.<\/p>\n

Through the interrogation of the survivors, Cuban authorities identified seven of the 10 passengers, including Conrado Galindo Sariol, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Rodr\u00edguez Castell\u00f3, Cristian Ernesto Acosta Guevara, and Roberto Azcorra Consuegra.<\/p>\n

One of the deceased was identified as Michel Ortega Casanova, an American citizen and truck driver who had lived in the US for over 20 years. The identities of the other three deceased individuals have not yet been released.<\/p>\n

Misael Ortega Casanova, the brother of the deceased, told the Associated Press late Wednesday that while he mourns his brother\u2019s death, Michel had become “obsessed” with the pursuit of Cuban freedom.<\/p>\n

“Only those of us who have lived there can understand,” Misael said, referring to the hardships faced by Cubans on the island. He noted that his brother left behind a wife, a mother, two sisters, and a pregnant daughter.<\/p>\n

“No one knew [the plans],” Misael added. “My mother is devastated. They became so obsessed that they did not think about the consequences or their own lives.”<\/p>\n

He stated he did not recognize any of the other names released by the Cuban government but expressed hope that his brother’s death would serve a purpose. “Maybe this will justify that one day Cuba will be free.”<\/p>\n

One of those identified by Havana, Conrado Galindo Sariol, appeared in a June 2025 interview with the US-based Mart\u00ed Noticias, where he called for regime change. Described as a “legend” and a former political prisoner, Galindo said he sought to support the struggle of Cubans, particularly in the eastern part of the island, to “achieve the necessary freedom.”<\/p>\n

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters he is aware of the incident and that US agencies are gathering information to determine if the victims were American citizens or permanent residents.<\/p>\n

Speaking from Basseterre airport in St. Kitts, where he was attending a regional summit, Rubio said, “Various units of the US government are currently trying to determine the details of the incident, which are not being provided to us at this time.”<\/p>\n

Rubio declined to speculate on the nature of the mission but emphasized that the US would not rely solely on information provided by Havana.<\/p>\n

“Armed clashes of this nature in the open sea are extremely unusual. This is not something that happens every day. Obviously, it is an event that has not happened in Cuba for a very long time,” Rubio said.<\/p>\n

Both the US Department of Homeland Security and the US Coast Guard are investigating. Rubio stressed that much of the public information currently stems from Cuban sources.<\/p>\n

“As we collect more information, we will verify this independently and be prepared to respond accordingly. We will have our own information. We will understand exactly what happened,” he said. Rubio clarified that this was not a US government operation and noted that the US maintains “constant contact” with Cuba at the “Coast Guard level.”<\/p>\n

The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida stated it would seek answers through “all available legal and diplomatic channels,” noting that the facts remain “unclear and contradictory.”<\/p>\n

US Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday that Rubio had briefed him on the situation, adding that the White House is monitoring the developments. “I hope the situation is not as bad as we fear,” Vance said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Florida General Counsel James Uthmeier announced that he had directed prosecutors to coordinate with federal and state law enforcement to launch an investigation.<\/p>\n

“The Cuban government cannot be trusted, and we will do everything in our power to hold these communists accountable,” Uthmeier stated.<\/p>\n
