sources<\/a><\/span> who spoke to the Financial Times, Abu Dhabi has notified the United States and other Western governments of its willingness to participate.<\/p>\nThe sources said the UAE would deploy its own navy:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe focus is on assembling as broad an international force as possible. This is not about going to war with Iran. Iran has effectively declared war on the global economy, and countries should stand against that.\u201d<\/p>\n
The same source added that the UAE is working alongside Bahrain on a UN Security Council resolution to authorise any future task force, although Russia and China may oppose the move.<\/p>\n
Retaliatory actions by Iran have brought traffic in the strait\u2014through which roughly one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil and gas passes\u2014to a near standstill. Gulf states fear that even if hostilities subside, Tehran may attempt to maintain its grip over the waterway.<\/p>\n
Among some Gulf countries and within the Trump administration, there is a growing belief that reopening the strait without naval escorts is not feasible.<\/p>\n
Karoline Leavitt, speaking on Wednesday, said the administration was working to ensure ships could pass through the strait freely \u201cas quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
The UAE, which maintains a relatively small but technologically advanced navy, is pressing dozens of countries to form a \u201cHormuz Security Force\u201d to protect the strait from Iranian retaliation and escort vessels.<\/p>\n
The objective is to ease the bottleneck that threatens to keep oil prices elevated and disrupt supply chains feeding Gulf economies.<\/p>\n
Sultan al-Jaber, a senior UAE minister who discussed the issue this week in Washington with US Vice President JD Vance, said: \u201cIran is holding the Strait of Hormuz hostage, and every country is paying that ransom at the gas station, in grocery stores and in pharmacies.\u201d<\/p>\n
US NATO allies have so far resisted pressure from Donald Trump to escort ships through the strait. The US president has repeatedly criticised the transatlantic alliance and its members.<\/p>\n
Two sources said the only other Gulf country currently backing the plan is Bahrain, while the UAE hopes to secure support from Saudi Arabia and broader international partners.<\/p>\n
One source said the UAE military would participate fully in any multinational force and integrate completely within it.<\/p>\n
Abu Dhabi\u2019s increasingly assertive stance sets it apart from the other five Gulf states. The UAE and Bahrain were the only two Gulf countries to sign a joint statement with Western governments last week condemning Iran\u2019s attacks on commercial shipping and the effective closure of the strait.<\/p>\n
Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, remain caught between supporting Trump\u2019s push for stronger action and calling for a negotiated end to the conflict. They also fear that the US could abruptly withdraw, leaving behind a weakened but more \u201cradical\u201d Iranian regime.<\/p>\n
Regional officials and analysts believe Tehran has little incentive to reopen the strait, viewing it instead as a critical lever in wartime strategy.<\/p>\n
Two officials said countries in the region may accelerate plans to build pipelines and rail infrastructure to transport energy resources overland to Oman or the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n
Oman, the only Gulf state to publicly criticise the US and Israel for their decision to strike Iran, said it is \u201cworking intensively to establish safe passage arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d<\/p>\n
