Following the Israeli military’s failure to achieve its objective of unilaterally occupying the entirety of southern Lebanon, reports indicate that the Syrian army, led by Syrian President Ahmed Shara\u2014formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani\u2014could emerge as a partner of convenience for Israel against Hezbollah in the Lebanese theater.<\/p>\n

The Israeli newspaper Maariv<\/em> reported that Israeli military officials recently retreated from the goal of disarming Hezbollah, acknowledging that such an objective is no longer realistic.<\/p>\n

Hezbollah re-entered the conflict on the Israeli front, where a formal ceasefire had been in effect for 15 months, just days after the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran.<\/p>\n

Despite the ceasefire, the government in Tel Aviv maintained its occupation of critical areas in southern Lebanon while simultaneously conducting aerial strikes on an almost daily basis. During this period, Israeli forces carried out an intensive bombardment campaign across the country, including the capital Beirut, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, rescue workers, and resistance members.<\/p>\n

Israel also launched a ground operation in southern Lebanon with the aim of seizing the region extending to the strategically significant Litani River. However, the report noted that fierce resistance by Hezbollah militants on the ground prevented Israeli troops from advancing deep into Lebanon and hindered efforts to disarm the movement.<\/p>\n

Loss of confidence in the Lebanese army<\/strong><\/p>\n

Israel’s inability to seize southern Lebanon\u2014an area it values for its water resources and territorial objectives\u2014has led to increased criticism in Tel Aviv regarding the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).<\/p>\n

Israeli military officials had hoped that the Lebanese army, supported by the US and the UK, would engage Hezbollah on behalf of Tel Aviv. However, according to Maariv<\/em>, the Lebanese army avoided direct confrontation with Hezbollah and, in some instances, became susceptible to infiltration by elements close to the organization.<\/p>\n

Under these circumstances, Israeli officials have lost faith in the possibility of pushing back Hezbollah by relying on the Lebanese army. The newspaper reported that Tel Aviv has begun evaluating the option of deploying the Syrian army as a proxy force to exert pressure on Hezbollah from the northern and eastern fronts.<\/p>\n

Maariv<\/em> noted that only two parties remain in the region with both the will and the capability to fight Hezbollah: Israel and the new Syrian administration led by Shara. Israeli sources emphasized that this does not constitute a classical alliance but rather a convergence of interests. For Israel, this involves cooperation with a regime that views Hezbollah as an enemy and could become a functional partner in the Lebanese arena.<\/p>\n

Scenario for Israel-Syria coordination<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the scenario under consideration, a form of understanding could develop between Israel and Syria. Under this plan, the Israeli military would establish control in southern Lebanon, while the Syrian army conducts operations against Hezbollah in the north of the country. Sources speaking to the Israeli newspaper stated that this option was brought to the agenda because “all other avenues have failed.”<\/p>\n

Sources added that direct and indirect contacts between Israeli and Syrian officials on the matter are ongoing, with the possibility of the US assuming a mediating role in the process.<\/p>\n

The prevailing assumption in Tel Aviv suggests that if Western countries such as France and Germany fail to offer an alternative for defeating Hezbollah, the US may not block the move and could grant silent approval.<\/p>\n

The Israeli military announced a shift in its strategy in southern Lebanon on April 3. In a statement noting that the goal of disarming Hezbollah was unrealistic due to ongoing clashes and persistent rocket attacks, the military reported that a new arrangement, described as a “defensive line,” would be established along the border.<\/p>\n

This change in strategy was met with backlash among residents of Israel\u2019s northern settlements.<\/p>\n
