More than 1,100 artists, including Roger Waters and Peter Gabriel, have signed<\/a><\/span> an open letter calling for a boycott of the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest to protest Israel\u2019s participation in the annual event.<\/p>\n

In December, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) held a vote to permit Israel\u2019s participation in the competition, which is scheduled to take place in Vienna next month.<\/p>\n

The decision prompted several countries, including Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Slovenia, to announce their withdrawal from Eurovision.<\/p>\n

In that vote, 65% of EBU representatives supported changes to the voting and promotion rules, opposing continued debate regarding Israel\u2019s participation. Approximately 23% voted against the measures, while 10% abstained.<\/p>\n

The boycott campaign is being spearheaded by an organization called No Music For Genocide, which encourages artists and music rights holders to remove their content from streaming platforms in Israel.<\/p>\n

The current campaign by No Music For Genocide calls on artists, broadcasters, and the general public to boycott the 2026 edition of the contest.<\/p>\n

“We refuse to allow Eurovision to be used to whitewash and normalize Israel\u2019s genocide, siege, and brutal military occupation against Palestinians,” the letter, published Tuesday, stated.<\/p>\n

In addition to Waters and Gabriel, the open letter was signed by Brian Eno, Hot Chip, Sigur R\u00f3s, Massive Attack, and Kneecap.<\/p>\n

Signatories also include past winners of the competition, such as Emmelie de Forest, who won the 2013 Eurovision for Denmark with the song “Only Teardrops,” and Irish singer Charlie McGettigan, who won the 1993 contest with “Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids.”<\/p>\n

The letter further expressed support for Palestinian calls to boycott the event until the EBU bans Israel\u2019s public broadcaster, Kan, from participating.<\/p>\n

“Until the EBU bans the complicit Israeli broadcaster KAN, we support Palestinian calls for public broadcasters, artists, viewing party organizers, crew members, and fans to boycott Eurovision,” the letter stated.<\/p>\n

The campaign also argued that Israel should receive the same treatment as Russia, citing the EBU\u2019s decision to exclude Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The letter praised European countries that have chosen not to broadcast the event or decline to send an artist to represent them.<\/p>\n

“Just as artists stood against oppression in South Africa, we stand together now,” the letter continued.<\/p>\n

Organizers also sharply criticized the EBU, claiming the organization has “shattered the illusion of ‘neutrality’ it claims for Eurovision through its hypocritical responses to the crimes of Russia and Israel.”<\/p>\n

In 2022, the EBU stated that Russia\u2019s participation would “bring the competition into disrepute.”<\/p>\n

The letter continued: “We refuse to remain silent while Israel\u2019s genocidal violence stifles and silences Palestinian lives. While children in Israeli prisons are subjected to beatings for humming a melody. When almost every stage, studio, bookstore, and university in Gaza has been reduced to rubble, beneath which slaughtered bodies still await recovery and proper burial.”<\/p>\n

The Irish rap group Kneecap wrote on social media: “We have paid a price for speaking up\u2014canceled shows, lawsuits, visa bans\u2014and we would do it all again tomorrow. Silence is complicity. No stage for genocide. Free Palestine.”<\/p>\n

No Music For Genocide organizers added that during the 53 years Israel has been part of Eurovision, it has maintained systems of “apartheid, torture, land theft, and military occupation” against Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Israel has participated in 47 Eurovision contests since its debut in 1973, winning the title four times. This year, Israel is set to be represented by Noam Bettan, who will perform the song “Michelle” when taking the stage in Austria.<\/p>\n

At the time, Israeli President Isaac Herzog stated that his country “deserves to be represented on every world stage” and expressed hope that the contest would remain an event that promotes “culture, music, friendship between peoples, and cross-border cultural understanding.”<\/p>\n

In the United Kingdom, the BBC announced it would broadcast the contest, stating it supports the “collective decision taken by EBU members.” The German broadcaster SWR also confirmed its participation.<\/p>\n
