interview<\/a><\/span> with Euractiv, the RN lawmaker argued that Weber is constrained from doing so because European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has adopted an “entirely different approach.”<\/p>\nThe French legislator added that while Von der Leyen is officially aligned with the EPP, she remains “closer to the liberal Renew Europe group in practice.”<\/p>\n
Leggeri questioned whether the “cordon sanitaire”\u2014the long-standing strategy employed by mainstream political groups to isolate far-right parties\u2014remains in effect. He cited several instances in the European Parliament where the EPP voted alongside the Patriots for Europe, the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), and the “far-right” Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN).<\/p>\n
Drawing on his experience as the head of Frontex between 2015 and 2022, Leggeri further alleged that while many members of Von der Leyen\u2019s cabinet had previously supported migration policies, the Commission President herself lacks the political will required to combat human trafficking effectively.<\/p>\n
“Von der Leyen represents another face of left-leaning, pro-migration politics,” the lawmaker stated.<\/p>\n
The MEP also addressed the legal challenges faced by the EU\u2019s border and coast guard agency regarding its ability to share intelligence on human trafficking with Europol and member states. He noted that such intelligence, gathered during interviews with irregular migrants, has faced hurdles due to privacy concerns.<\/p>\n
“There are provisions in the founding charter implying that Frontex may collect personal data to contribute to criminal investigations into matters such as human trafficking and terrorism at the European Union\u2019s external borders,” Leggeri said.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he criticized European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewi\u00f3rowski, accusing him of attempting to obstruct cooperation between Frontex and Europol.<\/p>\n
Leggeri attributed this stance to “ideology” and pressure from non-governmental organizations and left-wing parties, which he claims wish to transform Frontex into a “humanitarian organization” rather than a “law enforcement agency.”<\/p>\n
An EU official clarified that while Frontex may continue intelligence sharing, it is no longer permitted to systematically transfer interrogation data without conducting individual assessments.<\/p>\n
