Meta Platforms Inc. has notified<\/a><\/span> its US employees that it is installing mandatory keystroke-tracking software on their work computers to train the company’s artificial intelligence agents.<\/p>\n

According to an internal announcement, Meta\u2019s AI models currently lack “some of the basic ways people use computers, such as selecting from drop-down menus and using keyboard shortcuts.” To address this, the company informed staff that they could help improve these models “simply by doing their daily work.”<\/p>\n

The tool, known as the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), is designed to operate across business-related applications and websites. In addition to tracking input, the software captures periodic screenshots of content displayed on employee screens.<\/p>\n

The initiative has met with significant internal resistance. Business Insider reported<\/a><\/span> that the most-liked comment on the internal memo expressed deep concern, with one employee writing, “This makes me very uncomfortable. How do we opt out?”<\/p>\n

Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth responded directly to the post, stating, “There is no opt-out.” This response reportedly triggered a surge of negative emoji reactions from employees, including shocked, crying, and angry icons.<\/p>\n

A Meta spokesperson told Business Insider that “safeguards are in place to protect sensitive content and the data is not used for any other purpose.”<\/p>\n

Bosworth has previously signaled to the workforce that Meta would intensify internal data collection. He described a strategic shift toward a future where “our agents will do the work first, and our role will be to direct, review, and help them improve.”<\/p>\n

The tracking program is part of a broader, company-wide pivot toward artificial intelligence. Over the past year, Meta established the Meta Superintelligence Labs unit, launched “AI Weeks” events, and restructured its personnel into specialized “AI pods.”<\/p>\n

While the software is mandatory, sources familiar with the matter noted that Meta has long monitored activity on company-issued devices, and employees are briefed on these policies upon hiring. Consequently, the new program is framed as an extension of existing rules rather than a fundamental change in corporate policy.<\/p>\n

The tracking is reportedly limited to widely used professional applications, including Gmail, GChat, and Metamate\u2014an internal AI assistant developed for employees. The software is currently restricted to desktop computers and does not apply to employees’ mobile phones.<\/p>\n

The aggressive focus on AI development comes as Meta and other technology giants significantly increase capital expenditure in the sector. Simultaneously, the Facebook and Instagram parent company is planning to reduce<\/a><\/span> its global workforce by 10% next month. Reuters has reported that further layoffs are anticipated as AI advancements continue to reshape industry requirements.<\/p>\n
