The United States exported<\/a><\/span> a record 5.2 million barrels of crude oil per day in April, according to data from the commodity analytics firm Kpler.<\/p>\n

This new milestone represents a 30% increase compared to the month preceding the outbreak of the war with Iran.<\/p>\n

Despite these record exports, prices at US gasoline stations continue to climb.<\/p>\n

The discrepancy lies primarily in a refinery mismatch. US refining infrastructure is largely configured to process heavy, high-sulfur (sour) crude oil.<\/p>\n

In contrast, production in Texas, Louisiana, and North Dakota consists predominantly of light crude, while Alaska serves as the primary source of medium-grade crude.<\/p>\n

Due to these technical constraints, US crude is exported to nations with refining capacities better suited for light grades.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, gasoline prices remain influenced by the global market. Consequently, while the US has achieved net exporter status, this shift has essentially no impact on the prices American consumers pay at the pump.<\/p>\n

Matt Smith, director of commodity research at Kpler, told CNBC: “Asian markets are buying whatever they can get their hands on, so they are taking large volumes of light sweet crude.”<\/p>\n

Light sweet crude is a high-quality oil classification containing less than 0.5% sulfur (sweet) and characterized by low density and viscosity (light).<\/p>\n

This market dynamic is expected to change once the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. Smith noted that Middle Eastern crude represents a “hole that cannot be plugged,” adding that the only sustainable solution is the long-term restoration of secure supply from the region.<\/p>\n

The ongoing situation in the Strait of Hormuz has increased the prominence of the US as a petroleum exporter. Bloomberg reported that the US has surpassed Saudi Arabia to become the world\u2019s number one exporter of crude oil.<\/p>\n

However, the report also noted that countries “snapping up” US crude, particularly in Asia, are doing so as a “last resort.”<\/p>\n

As part of an effort to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, President Trump announced yesterday evening that, as of this morning local time, the US will provide escorts for vessels from countries not involved in the conflict that are currently stranded in the waterway, “so that these ships can continue their business freely and comfortably.”<\/p>\n

Iranian state media reacted to the plan by calling it a “delusion.” Major General Ali Abdullahi issued a warning, stating: “We warn that any foreign armed force, especially the aggressive American military, attempting to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz will be subject to attack.”<\/p>\n

The international Brent crude benchmark price has risen 89% since the beginning of 2026. The Wall Street Journal estimated that Americans spent $125 million more to fill their gasoline tanks on May 1 than they did the previous Friday.<\/p>\n
