Israel is expanding<\/a><\/span> its hold over territory in southern Syria not only through military means but also through the acquisition of agricultural land by individuals of Jewish origin who hold multiple citizenships.<\/p>\n

According to the Lebanon-based newspaper Al-Akhbar, religiously motivated Jewish settlers are working to advance the “Greater Israel” ideal beyond Damascus, into Lebanon and across large parts of the Arab world.<\/p>\n

A local source from the Deraa Governorate in southern Syria said that large-scale purchases of agricultural land are being carried out in the Yarmouk Basin, which borders the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and contains significant water resources.<\/p>\n

The transactions are reportedly being organized by individuals linked to Jewish agencies who carry passports from a range of countries, including Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

The report specifically names an organization called the “Bashan Pioneers” as one of the key parties involved in the land acquisitions.<\/p>\n

200,000 dunams of land sold<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the sources, the total area subject to these transactions has reached approximately 200,000 dunams, or 200 square kilometers. While unease prevails among local residents, some of whom suspect that certain deals are connected to Jewish organizations, the sales have been recorded through official contracts.<\/p>\n

Sources speaking to Al-Akhbar also reported that an Israeli delegation recently visited archaeological sites in the area, particularly hills believed to contain ancient Jewish cemeteries.<\/p>\n

In a related development, former Syrian army installations in the Deraa countryside \u2014 including the 61st Brigade headquarters and the 128th Battalion of the 5th Division \u2014 have been purchased by an Australian businessman. The individual is reported to be acting on behalf of a Jewish agency focused on expansionist and settlement activity.<\/p>\n

Israel’s advance in the post-Assad era<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was toppled in December 2024, Israel has expanded its occupation of the Golan Heights and other areas of southern Syria.<\/p>\n

Jewish settler groups in Israel state that they aim to seize territory in southern Syria and southern Lebanon through military conquest and settlement in order to extend the borders of “Greater Israel.”<\/p>\n

Israeli forces have been carrying out raids into southern Syria on an almost daily basis, without encountering any resistance from Syria’s new government led by former ISIS commander Ahmed al-Sharaa.<\/p>\n

In the 2024 documentary “Israel: Ministers of Chaos,” Israeli Finance Minister and settler leader Bezalel Smotrich stated: “It is written that the future of Jerusalem will expand as far as Damascus.”<\/p>\n

Smotrich suggested that Israel would expand “gradually” and would ultimately encompass all of the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
