Other close Gulf allies were also caught unprepared; the president only spoke with Qatari leaders after the operation had already commenced.<\/p>\n
A Saudi source told NBC that Trump and the Crown Prince remain in “regular contact.” The source added that Saudi officials are also maintaining communication with Trump, Vice President JD Vance, US Central Command (CENTCOM), and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n
When asked if the announcement of Project Freedom had caught Saudi leaders off guard, the Saudi source responded, “The problem with that premise is that events are developing very fast in real time.” The source further noted that Saudi Arabia remains “extremely supportive of diplomatic efforts” led by Pakistan to reach an agreement between Iran and the US to end the conflict.<\/p>\n
A White House official, responding to reports that some Gulf leaders were surprised by the announcement of the maritime initiative, stated that “allies in the region were briefed in advance.”<\/p>\n
However, a Middle East diplomat stated that the US did not coordinate Project Freedom with Omani officials until after Trump had made the public announcement. “The US made a statement and then coordinated with us. We were not upset or angry,” the diplomat added.<\/p>\n
A US official noted that the US military had prepared a series of additional vessels in the Gulf for transit through the strait before the operation was halted. US Central Command had previously announced that two US-flagged vessels successfully completed the transit under the Project Freedom framework.<\/p>\n
In his social media post, Trump stated that Project Freedom would be suspended for a short period “to see if a deal can be finalized and signed to resolve the war.”<\/p>\n
The US military maintains fighter jets, refueling tankers, and air defense systems at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Riyadh had previously permitted the US to fly aircraft from the base to support operations related to the conflict in Iran, and had also allowed transit for aircraft based in neighboring countries.<\/p>\n
“For geographical reasons, the cooperation of regional partners is required to use the airspace along their borders,” a US official said. Military aircraft were vital to protecting vessels during Project Freedom, effectively providing a defensive umbrella.<\/p>\n
The US military refers to the permission to use another country\u2019s territory as ABO\u2014Access, Basing, and Overflight. Fighter jets, refueling tankers, and support aircraft must all obtain flight clearance from key regional allies. While Saudi Arabia and Jordan are critical for basing, Kuwait is essential for overflight, and Oman is vital for both overflight and maritime logistics.<\/p>\n
Trump called the Emir of Qatar after Project Freedom had begun. A Qatari official said in a statement that the two leaders discussed a ceasefire agreement and its “impact on maritime security and global supply chains,” adding that the Emir emphasized the importance of de-escalation.<\/p>\n
The US military maintains a significant presence in and around the Gulf, which remains more extensive than it was at the start of the conflict on Feb. 28. Two aircraft carrier strike groups are currently in the region, and the Pentagon has provided additional logistics, support, and replenished stockpiles.<\/p>\n
