Hungary\u2019s new foreign minister, Anita Orb\u00e1n, said<\/a><\/span> the country would no longer use its veto power in the European Union as a tool of political pressure.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n said Hungary had \u201ctoo often become an obstacle in Europe\u2019s decision-making process,\u201d adding: \u201cWe used the veto not as a last resort, but for political promotion.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Ukraine, Orb\u00e1n said Budapest would support the country\u2019s integration with the EU only on the basis of \u201cstrict national interests\u201d and would continue to demand additional rights for the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the new government plans to maintain Budapest\u2019s policy of keeping its distance financially from the war.<\/p>\n

According to Index, responding<\/a><\/span> to a question about the EU\u2019s \u20ac90 billion loan package for Ukraine \u2014 from which Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia had previously secured exemptions \u2014 Anita Orb\u00e1n said the incoming administration would not voluntarily assume repayment obligations and would consider legal avenues to preserve Hungary\u2019s exemption if placed under pressure.<\/p>\n

Anita Orb\u00e1n also criticized the outgoing administration of Viktor Orb\u00e1n. She said that under the leadership of Tisza, Hungary would no longer be an isolated pawn within the EU or \u201ca stick jammed into the gears,\u201d but instead would become a reliable partner and coalition builder.<\/p>\n

The new government\u2019s main priority is to recover billions of euros in EU funds currently frozen over what Brussels says are \u201crule of law violations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anita Orb\u00e1n said the suspension represented the direct cost of losing Europe\u2019s trust, adding that no successful country could be built on corruption.<\/p>\n

The new minister pledged that the National Assembly would undertake a serious legislative effort before the summer recess to implement the necessary anti-corruption and transparency safeguards.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EU is not expecting anything that would be bad for the Hungarian people,\u201d the new foreign minister said, rejecting claims by the previous government that Brussels had imposed policies contrary to national interests in exchange for funding.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n also outlined the government\u2019s geopolitical and economic goals, stressing that Hungary\u2019s place was within the Western federal system.<\/p>\n

She told the parliamentary committee that the new administration aimed to meet the Maastricht criteria and adopt the euro by 2030.<\/p>\n

On the war in Ukraine, the new foreign minister reiterated that Hungary would not send troops.<\/p>\n

On May 9, P\u00e9ter Magyar, leader of the former opposition Tisza party, was sworn in as prime minister and formally took office.<\/p>\n

Earlier, during parliament\u2019s opening session, lawmakers elected a new speaker. One of his first decisions was to restore the EU flag to the parliament building.<\/p>\n
