The US has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>According to Reuters, Iraq is among the producers most heavily affected by the disruption, as much of its crude oil exports are typically shipped through the strait.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan, which has sought to mediate in the conflict, is also heavily dependent on Gulf energy imports and has faced rising fuel costs.<\/p>\n<p>Under a previously unreported agreement between Baghdad and Tehran, Iraq secured guarantees for the safe passage of two supertankers carrying roughly 2 million barrels of crude each, which crossed the strait on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>As Iraq seeks to safeguard oil revenues that account for 95% of its budget, an Iraqi Oil Ministry official familiar with the initial agreement and ongoing talks told Reuters that Baghdad is now seeking approval from Iran for additional transit shipments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIraq is a close ally of Iran, and any disruption to the Iraqi economy would also damage Iran\u2019s economic interests in the country,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n<p>A second Iraqi Oil Ministry official and a shipping industry source also confirmed the discussions with Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, two industry sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that two tankers carrying Qatari LNG had departed for Pakistan under a separate bilateral agreement signed between Islamabad and Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Before the war, Pakistan was receiving around 10 LNG shipments a month and is now facing high summer electricity demand driven by cooling needs.<\/p>\n<p>The sources said neither Iraq nor Pakistan had made direct payments to Iran or to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for the transit arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>Two industry sources added that Qatar was not directly involved in the bilateral agreements but had informed the US ahead of shipments bound for Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>According to sources close to the negotiations, other countries are also pursuing similar arrangements as rising energy costs and supply disruptions place a heavy burden on Asian economies in particular.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs more governments become willing to enter transit agreements with Iran, there is a risk that the idea of Iran exercising a more permanent form of control over the Strait of Hormuz becomes normalized,\u201d said Saul Kavonic, head of research at consultancy MST Marquee.<\/p>\n<p>Before the war, roughly 3,000 ships passed through Hormuz each month. Shipping data now shows traffic running at about 5% of that level.<\/p>\n<p>The disruption has pushed Brent crude prices up by more than 50% since the conflict erupted in late February. LNG prices in Europe and Asia have jumped by roughly 35% to 50%.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has said it intends to maintain control over the strait after the war. As part of any agreement, Tehran has sought compensation, sanctions relief, and access to frozen assets.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump dismissed those demands as \u201cgarbage,\u201d dimming hopes for a deal to end the conflict for now.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, industry sources said Iran has formalized its control over the strait. One Iraqi Oil Ministry official said Tehran now requires Iraq to submit documentation for each tanker in order to facilitate passage through designated maritime routes overseen by Iranian naval forces.<\/p>\n<p>Specialized teams within Iraq\u2019s Oil Ministry are providing Iranian authorities with detailed information on each vessel, including destination, shipping details, ownership, and cargo specifications, in an effort to prevent incidents.<\/p>\n<p>A Pakistani source familiar with negotiations over vessel transit with Iran said the process has encountered difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Revolutionary Guards sometimes change the rules, so it\u2019s difficult to keep things running smoothly, but we are trying to manage it,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- notionvc: e6f58d45-5c3a-4722-b5ea-0e9922af1ed1 --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iraq and Pakistan have signed agreements with Iran to secure oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from the Gulf, underscoring Tehran\u2019s ability to control energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
