Saudi Arabia carried out strikes against targets linked to factions within Iraq\u2019s Popular Mobilization Forces, known as Hashd al-Shaabi, during the conflict with Iran, Reuters reported<\/a><\/span>, citing sources.<\/p>\n

The report said the strikes formed part of a broader Gulf military campaign that was kept from public view during the war with Iran.<\/p>\n

Two sources told Reuters that Saudi warplanes struck Hashd al-Shaabi-linked targets near the kingdom\u2019s border with Iraq.<\/p>\n

A Western official said some of the attacks were carried out around the period of the ceasefire agreement reached between Iran and the US on April 7.<\/p>\n

According to the sources, the strikes targeted facilities used to launch drone and missile attacks against Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states. Iraqi sources also told Reuters that at least two attacks on Iraqi territory were launched from the direction of Kuwait.<\/p>\n

Reuters reported that an unnamed Saudi Foreign Ministry official said Riyadh was working to de-escalate tensions and promote restraint in order to ensure \u201cthe stability, security and prosperity of the region.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official declined to comment on the strikes in Iraq.<\/p>\n

Two Iraqi security officials and the Iraqi government\u2019s security adviser told the news agency that Kuwait and Saudi Arabia warned Baghdad in March that attacks by Iran-aligned groups against Gulf states using missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles had to be prevented.<\/p>\n

The Iraqi side said the country\u2019s armed forces had foiled several attempted attacks and seized a missile launcher allegedly intended for use in strikes on Saudi energy facilities.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Reuters reported, citing sources within Iraq\u2019s security institutions, that Iran-aligned armed groups continue to survey Iraq\u2019s border regions with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia using reconnaissance drones and are passing the collected intelligence to Tehran.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are trying to determine what was damaged and what remains operational. They are preparing for the next attack,\u201d a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.<\/p>\n

In a separate report<\/a><\/span> published on May 12, Reuters cited Western and Iranian officials as saying that Saudi Arabia carried out a series of strikes inside Iranian territory in late March.<\/p>\n

The report said the attacks were conducted in response to strikes carried out during the war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

The Wall Street Journal reported<\/a><\/span> the same day, citing sources, that the United Arab Emirates had conducted covert attacks against Iran.<\/p>\n

According to the newspaper, an attack on Iran\u2019s Levan Island oil refinery took place in early April, around the same period US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire. The United Arab Emirates denied involvement in the attack.<\/p>\n

Axios reported on May 7, citing sources, that the US and Iran were close to signing a peace agreement.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump described the talks as \u201cgoing very well\u201d and said Tehran was prepared to abandon nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

Trump later said the ceasefire with Iran was \u201con life support.\u201d<\/p>\n
