Having qualified to enter the state parliament in Saxony-Anhalt by securing 5.3% of the vote, the BSW is seeking to clarify the question of cooperation with the AfD.<\/p>\n

Having previously announced that it would not join the “firewall” (Brandmauer) policy maintained by mainstream parties, above all the CDU, against the AfD, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) says it remains open to talks with all parties.<\/p>\n

The BSW’s lead candidate in Saxony-Anhalt, Thomas Schulze, stated<\/a><\/span> on Deutschlandfunk that if the AfD’s lead candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, runs for office, the BSW will maintain its stance of abstaining in the third round of voting in the state parliament.<\/p>\n

Schulze said the BSW should not be accused of serving as a “stepping stone”, adding that it is actually the other parties that act as such.<\/p>\n

“I see the AfD as a party elected by 44% of the people here. And I have to take that into account. For me, that is democracy,” the BSW candidate said.<\/p>\n

Schulze pointed out, for instance, that common ground exists with the AfD on the demand to lift sanctions against Russia.<\/p>\n

The BSW’s other lead candidate, Claudia Wittig, likewise did not rule out the possibility of a form of partnership in Saxony-Anhalt on election night.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the party’s founding leader, Sahra Wagenknecht, came out<\/a><\/span> last week against her party forming a coalition with the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt.<\/p>\n

In an extensive interview on the podcast “{ungeskriptet} by Ben”, she attributed this rejection both to the BSW’s lack of governing experience and to political differences between it and the AfD.<\/p>\n

When asked why she refused to form a coalition with the AfD, Wagenknecht addressed the situation within her own party first.<\/p>\n

Noting that the BSW will enter the Saxony-Anhalt State Parliament for the first time and has numerous candidates who have never worked as professional politicians, Wagenknecht considers entering an immediate coalition with a politically far more experienced party to be fundamentally problematic.<\/p>\n

According to her, this applies not only to the AfD, but also to the CDU. As a young party, the BSW faces the risk of being politically victimised in such a coalition government.<\/p>\n

In this regard, Wagenknecht is clearly drawing lessons from the BSW’s experiences in Thuringia.<\/p>\n

She now views its participation in the coalition government there as a mistake, accusing parts of the state organisation of failing to defend the BSW’s core principles adequately.<\/p>\n

However, Wagenknecht did not justify the decision to reject a coalition solely on strategic grounds. She also pointed to significant political differences with the AfD.<\/p>\n

In particular, she criticised what she assessed to be authoritarian tendencies within the party. She noted that in a joint coalition, the BSW might be unable to block decisions taken by an AfD-led ministry effectively, yet would still have to bear political responsibility for them.<\/p>\n

Wagenknecht cited a hypothetical interior ministry under AfD leadership as an example.<\/p>\n

At the same time, she voiced doubts as to whether the AfD currently possesses a sufficient number of suitable personnel to run a state government.<\/p>\n

In this context, Wagenknecht drew a clear distinction between a coalition and cooperation on individual policy projects.<\/p>\n

In her view, voting in favour of motions or legislative proposals alongside the AfD makes sense if there are shared points of substantive agreement and the required parliamentary majority can be secured.<\/p>\n

She thus distinguished the course followed by the BSW from a traditional “firewall” strategy.<\/p>\n

For a long time, Wagenknecht has advocated involving the AfD in political decision-making processes commensurate with its parliamentary strength, whilst nonetheless avoiding entering into lasting governing cooperation.<\/p>\n

Wagenknecht instead proposed a different governing model for Saxony-Anhalt. She argued that, following the elections, a supra-party figure should ideally be elected minister-president.<\/p>\n

This figure would then need to form a cabinet: in Wagenknecht’s view, professional competence should be the primary determining factor in assembling the cabinet roster.<\/p>\n

Such a government would have no fixed coalition majority. Instead, the government would need to secure a majority in the state parliament for each individual bill. Depending on the issue, different parties could take part in this process, including the AfD and the BSW.<\/p>\n

In this manner, Wagenknecht hopes both to prevent the formation of another “firewall coalition” against the AfD and to prevent the AfD from establishing unilateral dominance.<\/p>\n

At the same time, she makes clear that an absolute majority for the AfD is undesirable.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Wagenknecht rejected the political ostracisation of the AfD. She stated that after the state parliamentary elections, the BSW intends to offer talks to all parties represented in parliament, and she anticipated that discussions with the AfD will also take place.<\/p>\n

The position for Saxony-Anhalt is therefore clearly established: the BSW rules out a formal coalition with the AfD, but does not rule out talks or common parliamentary majorities on specific issues.<\/p>\n

Wagenknecht’s preferred model would be a supra-party state government operating with shifting majorities.<\/p>\n

Whether other parties, above all the AfD, would be open to such a model, however, remains open to question.<\/p>\n
