European Union member states are testing the ground for new legislative measures, only months after the entry into force of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, which radically overhauled border security and asylum rules.<\/p>\n

Ministers from a broad group of countries are gathering in M\u00fcnchen on Saturday to discuss potential amendments to the pact.<\/p>\n

According to a meeting document obtained<\/a><\/span> by the news website Euractiv, top of the agenda is a call on the European Commission to draft a “simplification” legislative package by mid-2027.<\/p>\n

The meeting will address simplifying asylum procedures and making it easier to revoke protection status and deport individuals in specific cases, including serious offenders.<\/p>\n

Participants will also evaluate steps to create a legal basis for the use of artificial intelligence in translation processes during asylum procedures.<\/p>\n

Prominent among the options under consideration are accelerating initial screening procedures and expanding the EU migration database, Eurodac, to encompass data gathered during screening.<\/p>\n

This step aims to provide national authorities with access to more comprehensive records on individuals entering the EU migration system.<\/p>\n

The M\u00fcnchen gathering, hosted by German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, takes place three months after the bloc-wide implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum began.<\/p>\n

Around 18 countries, including EU member states and actors outside the bloc such as Britain, are expected to attend the meeting.<\/p>\n

EU interior ministers will convene in Luxembourg next week to prepare for strategic migration discussions to be held by leaders at their summit in October.<\/p>\n

The bloc’s core migration pact was adopted following a delicate compromise between countries on the EU’s external borders and governments situated further north and west.<\/p>\n

Reopening individual articles for renegotiation risks reviving the differences that complicated past talks and calling the agreed compromises into question.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, centre-right and right-wing parties in the European Parliament hold the numerical strength in the current term to pass more restrictive regulations.<\/p>\n

EU capitals had backed tougher rules, including a new returns framework enabling the establishment of return centres in third countries.<\/p>\n

Many governments are seeking to put this option into practice on the ground.<\/p>\n

In early September, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Greece, and the Netherlands agreed on a timetable and model for centres to which irregular migrants awaiting deportation could be transferred.<\/p>\n

The migration-focused debates come at a time when the European Commission is planning amendments to the operational rules of Frontex, the EU border agency.<\/p>\n

The plans envisage strengthening the agency’s authority to cooperate with third countries, granting it a more active role in return operations, and expanding its powers to monitor disinformation circulating on social media.<\/p>\n
