As Donald Trump prepares to begin his second term as US President, panic signals are emerging from the heart of Europe.<\/p>\n

Former German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, for instance, is urging the next German government to shift its foreign policy direction and transform the EU into an independent power.<\/p>\n

To achieve this, Gabriel told the Springer Group newspaper\u00a0Bild<\/em><\/i>\u00a0on Sunday that the \u2018power triangle between France, Germany, and Poland\u2019 (the \u2018Weimar Triangle\u2019) should be reinforced.<\/p>\n

Economists like Marcel Fratzscher, President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) in Berlin, share similar views. Fratzscher stated that \u2018Europe must be strengthened\u2019 and criticized the German government and the European Commission for being \u2018as poorly prepared as possible\u2019 for Trump\u2019s inauguration.<\/p>\n

According to Gabriel Felbermayr, Director of the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO), the EU is already in a precarious position: Brussels is economically weakened and reliant on US liquefied natural gas (LNG), which gives Trump \u2018a few bad trump cards.\u2019<\/p>\n

Secret memorandum from the German Ambassador: Warning of \u2018maximum destruction\u2019 that could redefine the constitutional order<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a secret memorandum written by German Ambassador to the United States Andreas Michaelis warns of a \u2018maximum degradation\u2019 agenda that could redefine the American constitutional order.<\/p>\n

The document, obtained by Reuters and addressed to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, expresses concern about the \u2018erosion of democratic norms\u2019 in Trump\u2019s second administration.<\/p>\n

Michaelis describes Trump\u2019s vision as centered on \u2018the maximum concentration of power in the president at the expense of Congress and the [US] states.\u2019<\/p>\n

According to the document, key democratic institutions, including the legislature, law enforcement, and the media, risk losing their independence and becoming \u2018abused as a political arm.\u2019<\/p>\n

The memo also highlights the involvement of Big Tech companies, which Michaelis argues could be given \u2018the power to govern together.\u2019<\/p>\n

Michaelis notes that recent US Supreme Court decisions expanding presidential powers could enable Trump to bypass traditional checks and balances.<\/p>\n

The document also raises concerns about Trump\u2019s ability to exploit legal loopholes for political purposes. These include the possibility of using the military domestically in the event of an \u2018uprising\u2019 or \u2018invasion,\u2019 which would push the limits of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878.<\/p>\n

Tariff threat gives Europe a headache<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n

The EU could already be seriously damaged by the bitter dispute over Greenland and the threat of US tariffs, which may force German companies to relocate their investments to the US.<\/p>\n

From Washington\u2019s perspective under the new Trump administration, the case of Greenland is not just about weakening Denmark but also the EU as a whole.<\/p>\n

In particular, Trump\u2019s foreign policy is further obstructing Berlin and Paris\u2019s plans to become a world power on par with the US with the help of the EU.<\/p>\n

Trump is also seeking to shift the balance within the transatlantic alliance. The plan to impose tariffs on all US imports, including those from the EU, is an extension of this strategy.<\/p>\n

German business leaders think Trump is being \u2018criticized too much\u2019<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n

The Cologne-based German Institute for Economics (IW), closely aligned with the German business community, estimates that this could reduce Germany\u2019s economic output by up to 1.5 percent in both 2027 and 2028.<\/p>\n

According to a recent survey of 500 German executives, 80 percent of respondents said the German economy would suffer from Trump\u2019s actions. Of these, 68 percent expect \u2018some\u2019 damage, while 12 percent anticipate \u2018great damage.\u2019<\/p>\n

However, 75 percent of the business leaders surveyed believe that there is \u2018too much criticism\u2019 of Trump in Germany.<\/p>\n

Forty-four percent of respondents expect tech giant Elon Musk\u2019s new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the US to not only reduce government staff but also cut regulations that are burdensome for companies.<\/p>\n

Moritz Schularick, President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), recently stated that individual companies would have the opportunity to make profitable investments \u2018no longer in Germany but in the USA\u2019 and warned that this would be an \u2018additional burden\u2019 for the Federal Republic of Germany.<\/p>\n

Europe criticized for \u2018not being ready for Trump\u2019<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n

Gabriel Felbermayr, former IfW President and current Director of the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO), argued that the EU is currently suffering from a \u2018marked weakness in growth,\u2019 making it fragile.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the war in Ukraine is increasing the \u2018bargaining power of the Americans,\u2019 and the cutoff of Russian gas is reinforcing Europe\u2019s dependence on American LNG.<\/p>\n

With a share of around 20 percent, the U has become the EU\u2019s second-largest natural gas supplier after Norway. In 2024, Germany imported around 13.5 percent of its natural gas from the US; 86 percent of German terminals, which supply 8 percent of total German demand, were filled with US LNG.<\/p>\n

Felbermayr noted that if Trump threatens to restrict LNG export licenses, liquefied natural gas prices in Europe will rise, while those in the US will fall.<\/p>\n

According to Felbermayr, Trump has \u2018a few more bad trump cards\u2019 today than he did eight years ago.<\/p>\n

Europe calls for \u2018one voice\u2019 against the US<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n

Marcel Fratzscher, President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) in Berlin, also accused Germany of being \u2018miserably prepared\u2019 for the Trump era.<\/p>\n

According to Fratzscher, Germany is \u2018a small country compared to the US\u2019, and will lose in this conflict if Europe \u2018fails to speak with one voice.\u2019<\/p>\n

He argued that Berlin had been \u2018staring blankly\u2019 for at least six months and that Germany was only thinking about domestic politics, not \u2018how it wants to position itself globally or how it can strengthen Europe.\u2019<\/p>\n

Fratzscher stated that this positioning is \u2018urgently needed\u2019 to have a minimum level of protection against Donald Trump. He criticized the lack of a \u2018strategy\u2019 for the German government or the European Commission to stand shoulder to shoulder in disagreements with the Trump administration, pointing to a \u2018great division in Europe.\u2019<\/p>\n

The DIW President criticized Brussels for being \u2018as unprepared as possible\u2019 for Trump\u2019s second term, despite having \u2018really had enough time\u2019 to \u2018prepare in detail\u2019 for an \u2018intelligent counter-offensive\u2019 at the EU level against Trump\u2019s attacks, which had long been clearly foreseeable.<\/p>\n

Sigmar Gabriel calls for a \u2018quick change of course\u2019<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n

On the occasion of Trump\u2019s inauguration, former Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel is calling for a rapid change of course.<\/p>\n

In an article for\u00a0Bild<\/em><\/i>, published on January 19, Gabriel called for \u2018preparing for a completely different US president\u2019 than at the beginning of 2017.<\/p>\n

At that time, Trump was ill-prepared, and the professionals in Washington \u2018quickly got him under control,\u2019 Gabriel said, emphasizing that the new president is following a clear plan this time.<\/p>\n

\u2018It is clear that we Europeans … need the United States as a partner: economically, politically, and militarily,\u2019 the German politician wrote, describing the move against Greenland, for example, as \u2018a precursor to his well-known strategy of resorting to political provocations to better enforce serious demands.\u2019<\/p>\n

Gabriel argued that it is necessary to cooperate with Trump but, at the same time, \u2018above all, to work on Europe\u2019s economic, political, and military strength.\u2019 He called it \u2018unfortunate\u2019 that the EU lacks a political center.<\/p>\n

The French-German-Polish power triaangle, which could act as the center of Europe, has been \u2018criminally neglected for years\u2019 by the German government, Gabriel argued. He concluded that the next chancellor must, therefore, \u2018first and foremost, change the course of foreign policy.\u2019<\/p>\n
