Generally, two distinct perspectives on Trump’s rise to power have emerged in Tehran:<\/p>\n
The “Opportunity” perspective<\/b><\/p>\n
This perspective views Trump’s presidency as a potential opportunity for Tehran. It posits that Trump, seeking to solidify his legacy as a transformative leader, might strive for significant breakthroughs in his second term. Within this framework, resolving the long-standing crisis with Iran could be an appealing endeavor for Trump, offering a chance to reshape the narrative of the past 45 years. This perspective highlights Trump\u2019s demonstrated willingness to exhibit flexibility to achieve success and suggests Tehran should recognize his administration as an opportunity to lay the groundwork for mutual political gains or a “win-win” scenario.<\/p>\n
The “distrust” perspective<\/b><\/p>\n
Conversely, this viewpoint characterizes Trump as highly unreliable, asserting that the significant influence of the Zionist lobby in the US would prevent Trump from offering substantial concessions to Iran. Furthermore, it highlights that key figures within Trump\u2019s inner circle have recently shown little inclination towards de-escalation, frequently resorting to threatening and disparaging rhetoric. Those holding this view contend that Iran\u2019s responses to events, such as the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani, suggest that it lacks the capacity to retaliate decisively and, therefore, would ultimately react predictably. Based on this, this group believes a policy of maximum pressure against Iran is essential, advocating the curbing of Iran\u2019s revolutionary ideology of 1979 and its efforts to form a non-Western alliance with countries such as Russia and China.<\/p>\n

The strained relationship between Iran and the US fits this framework, suggesting a significant opportunity exists for progress if a degree of flexibility can be achieved. However, the aggressive tone used by members of Trump’s team towards Iran, their threats of attacking Iranian nuclear facilities and infrastructure, along with Israel’s strong influence on Trump’s decision-making, provide reason to be wary.<\/p>\n
A different perspective of the political dichotomy in Iran regarding how to deal with Trump might be: one group believes the US is genuinely committed to resolving the Middle East conflict, and they view Iran as a key player in this process. Given the uncertainties and the unpredictability surrounding Trump\u2019s intentions towards Iran, Iranian politicians must contemplate worst-case scenarios, especially when considering that the US currently appears stronger, and Iran is more vulnerable.<\/p>\n
Possible future<\/b><\/p>\n
It\u2019s undeniable that time is of the essence for Iran. The activation of the “snapback mechanism” against Iran by October 2025 could expose the nation to immense international pressure. Until then, Iran must devise a solution to overcome the current challenge. Tehran\u2019s more measured actions following the October 7 war point towards a strategic shift from unpredictability to controlled behavior, an indication of how Tehran assesses its capabilities.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s team is expected to push Tehran to engage in negotiations, likely advocating for a comprehensive agenda, as opposed to limiting discussions solely to nuclear concerns. This approach is anticipated to involve wide-ranging discussions addressing Iran’s regional behavior, the activities of affiliated resistance groups, and its broader relationship with the United States. The primary aim of such negotiations would be to constrain and make Iran\u2019s political conduct more easily manageable.<\/p>\n
Should Iran decline these broader negotiations as the timeline for the activation of the trigger mechanism comes closer, Iran might encounter extreme pressure. Such circumstances would subject the country to a serious political, economic and social crisis or would become the subject of a massive military attack that destroys the nations critical economic and military infrastructure, or, finally leading Iran to capitulate to the demands of the United States.<\/p>\n

The majority of Iranian politicians appear to be making an attempt to normalize and separate the US as a technical, foreign policy issue instead of one involving the identity of the Islamic Republic in the coming weeks. This suggests a change that would set up Iranian politicians and allow them to sit at the table to talk with the Americans.<\/p>\n
However, Iranian politicians’ main dilemma revolves around the lack of internal consensus to allow negotiations to commence with the US, in addition to what consequences might emerge, or how they would handle said issues. This leads Iranian politicians to be concerned that their domestic actions would lead to scrutiny or ultimately end their political careers.<\/p>\n
Past experiences involving the nuclear deal have shown that conservative and reformist wings have previously not held back undermining any type of diplomatic success, due to partisan or group benefits. Given this situation, the ongoing discussion of negotiations with the United States opens up a political reality that Iranian politicians would be open to disrupting due to domestic political or social opinions.<\/p>\n
In summary, the next nine months will be defining ones for a new Iran.
