Progress has also been made on fentanyl.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The sources stated that separate talks could soon be held on reducing China\u2019s exports of this opioid derivative, which has contributed to the increase in overdose deaths in recent years.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement, \u201cThe sole purpose of the administration in these negotiations is to advance President Trump\u2019s America First economic agenda towards fair and reciprocal trade relations. All discussions about \u2018target\u2019 tariff rates are baseless speculation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The biggest challenge facing the Trump administration is the extremely high level of tariffs between the world\u2019s two largest economies. I think we\u2019re going to have a good weekend with China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told <em>CNBC<\/em>, \u201cDe-escalating, bringing these rates down to where they could be, where they should be, I think that\u2019s Scott Bessent\u2019s goal. I think that\u2019s the Chinese delegation\u2019s goal. And that\u2019s the good outcome the President is hoping for, a world where there\u2019s de-escalation, where we\u2019re back together, and we\u2019re working on a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">US stock markets rose on Thursday as investors reacted positively to Trump\u2019s comments on the trade talks with China.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Meanwhile, Chinese officials are cautious about their goals in the talks.
