{"id":9883,"date":"2025-06-04T14:04:37","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T11:04:37","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2025-06-04T14:04:37","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T11:04:37","slug":"vatican-under-pope-leo-xiv-warns-against-ai-playing-god-urges-ethical-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harici.com.tr\/en\/vatican-under-pope-leo-xiv-warns-against-ai-playing-god-urges-ethical-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Vatican under Pope Leo XIV warns against AI &#8216;playing God,&#8217; urges ethical development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-spacing=\"double\">The new leader of the Catholic world, Pope Leo XIV, has made reducing the risks of \u201cuncontrolled artificial intelligence\u201d the defining mission of his papacy.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">In his <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" spellcheck=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/speeches\/2025\/may\/documents\/20250510-collegio-cardinalizio.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">first official address<\/a> <\/span>to the cardinals, the new Pope warned against the dangers artificial intelligence poses to \u201chuman dignity, justice, and labor.\u201d Two days later, speaking to journalists, he praised the technology\u2019s \u201cimmense potential\u201d while also emphasizing the responsibility to \u201censure it is used for the benefit of all people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Like Pope Leo XIII, whose name he took and who called for \u201crestructuring\u201d relations between workers and capital during the industrial revolution in the last quarter of the 19th century, Leo XIV positions himself as a \u201cguardian of the social fabric\u201d against uncontrolled modern technologies.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Indeed, the new Pope had said he took this name pointing to the role of his predecessor, who published the famous papal encyclical <em>Rerum Novarum<\/em>, in \u201csocial matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Franciscan friar Paolo Benanti, a Vatican advisor on artificial intelligence ethics, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" spellcheck=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/pope-leo-xiv-wants-stop-ai-playing-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">told<\/a><\/span> <em>POLITICO<\/em>, \u201cThe Church asks us to look to the heavens, but also to walk on earth as the times require,\u201d adding that it is not unusual for the church to offer expertise in such a futuristic field.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Maria Savona, an AI expert and professor of innovation economics at Luiss University in Rome and the University of Sussex, stated, \u201cThe Vatican wants to avoid certain AI developments that could harm human rights and dignity and disproportionately affect low-skilled workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">The Vatican\u2019s efforts to secure a place for itself in artificial intelligence regulation began with Leo\u2019s predecessor. In 2020, Pope Francis brought together technology companies like IBM and Cisco, as well as religious and political leaders, to sign the <em>Rome Call for AI Ethics<\/em>, a commitment to developing artificial intelligence technologies that are \u201caccountable and benefit society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">In January, the Vatican issued an official statement warning that artificial intelligence could lead humanity to become a \u201cslave to its own work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Leo, the first pope from the US\u2014the homeland of Silicon Valley and the tech revolution\u2014and a mathematics graduate, is in a \u201cunique position\u201d to carry this banner, according to <em>POLITICO<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Meanwhile, Washington is spearheading a deregulation move in the AI field. President Donald Trump rolled back the security rules set by his predecessor, Joe Biden, and announced a half-trillion-dollar AI plan with leading company OpenAI.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">According to Benanti, the church\u2019s role as an \u201cexpert in humanity\u201d can encourage leaders, especially in Catholic countries, to \u201ccreate AI that values people and aligns with social justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">In Leo\u2019s first meeting with Italian leader Giorgia Meloni, the two pledged to continue working for \u201cethical and human-centered artificial intelligence development.\u201d Last year, at Meloni\u2019s invitation, Francis had addressed G7 leaders on artificial intelligence ethics.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Savona commented, &#8220;The Vatican\u2019s interest in artificial intelligence is not strange. Francis also showed great interest in climate change, one of today\u2019s significant problems. The Church\u2019s mission is to adapt to the world while remaining true to its fundamental principles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">Savona argued that as power concentrates in the hands of tech giants and wealthy nations, the Vatican could use its network in the \u201cGlobal South\u201d to ensure \u201cmore democratic access\u201d to artificial intelligence and push for European-dominated regulations to be adapted to global standards.<\/p>\n<p data-spacing=\"double\">On the other hand, Leo himself has fallen victim to AI-generated content.
