Germany still buying Russian gas via EU

Based on a report prepared by non-governmental organizations in Belgium, Germany, and Ukraine, the Financial Times reported that Germany continues to purchase Russian LNG through European Union countries, despite its refusal to import natural gas directly from Russia.
The German national energy company, Sefe, purchased Russian LNG through the French port of Dunkirk last year. This amount corresponds to more than six times the figure in 2023.
As part of the European Union’s efforts to wean itself off Russian fossil fuels, tracing Russian gas through the EU energy system has become a major problem.
In 2024, Russian gas imports by sea reached a record level due to the lack of a ban.
According to European Commission data, only 10 percent of the gas coming into the EU via pipelines in 2024 came from Russia. In return, sanctions were imposed on Russian coal and almost all Russian oil.
According to the report, Germany continues to receive between 3 percent and 9.2 percent of its gas supplies from Russia via EU countries.
Additionally, the lack of transparency in the gas market within the EU has led to accusations among member states and prevented joint action against Russian LNG.
