The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said that an average of 63 women a day were killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza, including 37 mothers who left their families behind.

“On #InternationalWomensDay, the women in #Gaza continue to endure the consequences of this brutal war,” UNRWA said on its social media platform X.

The post stressed that at least 9,000 women have been killed in Israeli attacks, with many more trapped under the rubble: “On average, 63 women are killed in Gaza per day – 37 are mothers who leave their families behind.”

Since 7 October, 30,800 Palestinians have been killed and 72,298 injured in Israel’s attacks on Gaza. More than 70 per cent of those killed in the attacks are reported to be women and children.

The statement noted that Israel has killed 8,900 women and injured more than 23,000 in the Gaza Strip since 7 October, when Israel began its attacks.

The statement noted that Israel has displaced more than half a million Gazan women and that 2,100 women are missing and their fate is unknown.

“In Gaza, 60,000 pregnant women lead a hard life in extremely difficult conditions, deprived of the most basic needs such as health and medical care. Hundreds of them have lost their children, newborns and unborn babies as a result of Israeli bombardment, fear and killing”.

Stressing the importance of Palestinian women, the statement said: “Palestinian women, who participate side by side with men in various fields of life and make great sacrifices to achieve their rights, the rights of their people and their children, are the example and symbol of perseverance and determination.”

The statement celebrated International Women’s Day by highlighting the resistance and determination of Palestinian women in the face of difficult conditions caused by Israeli attacks.

The Palestinian government in Gaza also issued a statement on 8 March, International Women’s Day, about Israel’s crimes against Palestinian women in Gaza.

The statement said that Israel has killed approximately 9,000 women in Gaza in its attacks since 7 October 2023: “This international day is a true example of humiliating, killing, shooting, torturing and forcibly displacing Palestinian women, especially those in Gaza, instead of honouring them. On International Women’s Day, which coincides with the cold-blooded murder of Palestinian women by the Israeli occupation army in its genocidal war against civilians, the world is watching this catastrophe and this dangerous violation against Palestinian women without doing anything”.
